Job Description The Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation is responsible for providing written tax advice to clients, evaluating and recommending courses of action to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, recognizing potential tax risks, and identifying changes in tax policy and regulations. The role involves marketing, networking, business development, and maintaining key client relationships. Additionally, the Tax Managing Director is a vital part of the office’s or region’s Tax Services leadership team, serving as a resource for guidance on complex tax issues.
Job Responsibilities
Research:
Conduct necessary investigations, analyze facts, prepare tax implication studies, and collaborate with other professionals to resolve complex issues.
Tax Compliance:
Ensure client compliance, manage engagements, and collaborate on sales tax compliance services.
Tax Consulting:
Handle inquiries from tax authorities, draft responses, monitor project implementations, and provide solutions based on industry knowledge.
Tax Controversy:
Represent clients before tax authorities and respond to inquiries.
Tax Specialization:
Act as SALT industry expert, identify cross-selling opportunities, manage SALT services, and develop tools for practice efficiency.
Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109:
Prepare tax workpapers.
ASC740-10:
Apply industry standards and firm policies related to tax standards, recognizing and documenting financial benefits.
Strategy Development:
Develop innovative ideas for tax reduction, participate in industry groups, and lead marketing initiatives.
Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise and review work of SALT team members.
Ensure training on tax software.
Evaluate performance and assist in professional development.
Provide performance feedback and act as a career advisor.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or relevant field; Master’s preferred; JD preferred.
Minimum 10 years SALT experience; supervisory experience required.
Experience with tax provisions and corporate taxation preferred.
CPA or relevant certification preferred.
Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
Ability to manage teams, build relationships, and handle multiple projects.
Deep knowledge of tax standards and client tax issues.
