Job Description The Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation, is responsible for providing written tax advice to clients, evaluating and recommending courses of action to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, recognizing potential tax risks, and identifying changes in tax policy and regulations. This role involves marketing, networking, business development, and maintaining key client relationships. The Tax Managing Director is a vital part of the office’s / region’s Tax Services leadership team and provides guidance on complex tax issues. Job Duties
Research
Identify when research is necessary and conduct investigations. Analyze research findings and sources. Prepare tax implication studies and outline alternatives. Collaborate with other tax professionals on complex matters.
Tax Compliance
Ensure client compliance with authorities and identify options to minimize tax and reporting burdens. Manage engagement metrics. Work with Business Development to promote SALT compliance services.
Tax Consulting
Handle inquiries from federal and state agencies. Draft responses to examiner questions. Monitor tax consulting project implementations. Provide solutions based on tax knowledge and industry understanding.
Tax Controversy
Represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues. Respond to agency questions.
Tax Specialization
Act as SALT industry expert. Identify cross-selling opportunities. Manage SALT services for clients. Develop tools for practice efficiency.
Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109
Prepare tax accrual workpapers.
ASC740-10
Apply industry standards and firm policies related to FAS 109 and FIN48. Recognize and document financial benefits for clients.
Strategy Development
Develop ideas to reduce taxes or expenses. Participate in industry groups. Lead marketing and external SALT initiatives.
Other duties as required Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise daily work of SALT team members. Ensure training on tax software. Evaluate performance and assist in goal setting. Provide performance feedback and career guidance. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or relevant field. Master’s degree preferred. Juris Doctorate preferred. Experience
Minimum 10 years SALT experience. Experience supervising tax professionals. Experience with tax provisions and corporate taxation preferred. Certifications
CPA or relevant certifications preferred. Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication skills. Strong analytical and research skills. Organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to multitask and work independently or in teams. Leadership and relationship-building skills. Deep knowledge of tax standards and sources. Individual salaries depend on qualifications, experience, skills, and location. Range: $157,500 - $420,000.
