The Research Assistant will work in Dr. Ana Maria Jaramillo lab in the Division of Genetic, Environmental, and Inhalational Disease. The laboratory works on mucin trafficking mechanisms in the airway epithelium. This position focuses on both research and lab management, with approximately 80% of the time dedicated to research projects. Job Duties: Conduct cell culture and rodent-based experiments. Compile, analyze, document, and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments. Make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the equipment as required. Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts, and other literature for information applicable to research experiments. Perform routine laboratory techniques and support laboratory operations (general laboratory duties, inventory, laboratory safety, regulatory and compliance). Maintenance of adequate lab supplies, reagents, and chemicals for daily research procedures. Perform specimen processing, biobanking and shipments. Perform collaborative studies with other research laboratories at KUMC. Perform PCR, Western blot, primary cell isolation, general tissue culture. Maintain a current Laboratory Notebook, documenting all calculations, procedures, results, and other relevant research information. Experience may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis. Preferred Qualifications: Work Experience: Direct laboratory experience in basic cell and molecular biology methods which includes but not limited to DNA/RNA manipulation, PCR, qPCR, immunodetection (IHC/IF/western blotting), immunoprecipitation, microscopy, and CRISPRs/siRNA/shRNA. Experience working with rodents. Skills: Communication. Organization. Time management. Computer skills.
