Fare Revenue Specialist
The Fare Revenue Specialist coordinates activities and operations related to fare revenue collections for all transit modes, including transit centers, bus maintenance facilities, and train stations. This position performs cash counts, accounting entries, and reconciliations; coordinates with armored services for cash pick-ups and change replenishments; and manages employees transit passes.
This position is distinguished by a broad knowledge of cash collection practices, banking procedures, related internal controls; the ability to prepare account reconciliations and record transactions in accounting journals; and an overall understanding of the interrelationships among the various accounting functions. S/he exercises a high level of responsibility and independence in monitoring the billing and collection of District revenues.
This position is under the direct supervision of the Controller. This position exercises no supervision. Further, this position is expected to participate in the sharing of expert knowledge and as a vital member of various project teams that may be instituted.
Normal working conditions for this position are both in an office and field setting. Business travel is required on a weekly basis to transit centers, bus maintenance facilities, and train stations.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs cash counts and prepares deposit slips for transit centers and paratransit services
- Orders servicing from armored services for ticket vending machines (TVMs), bus facilities, and coin/currency orders for transit centers.
- Audits and reconciles fare collection cash activity.
- Prepares fare collection accounting entries, investigates discrepancies, and corrects as needed.
- Reviews validity of customer refund requests.
- Responds and disputes merchant services chargebacks.
- Maintains employee transit passes in the fare revenue system.
- Prepares reports and financial information related to fare revenue and performance data.
- Reviews and reconciles vendor invoices applicable to the fare revenue collection processes.
- Gathers data for billing based on agreements with other transit operators.
- Maintains inventory of tickets, orders ticket stock as necessary, and tracks inventory on hand.
- Performs physical inventory of fare passes and access keys
- Fulfills certain fare product orders outside of the transit centers.
- Participates in fare revenue meetings and discussions.
- Completes NCTD forms and correspondence in a neat and timely fashion.
- Maintains a variety of files, reports, and recordkeeping systems.
- Performs testing of fare revenue system change updates before implementation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or above.
- Four (4) years prior similar experience of relevant experience in cash handling and reconciliations.
- Academic credits for basic accounting classes are a plus.
Certificates/Licenses:
- Possess and maintain a California driver's license, Class C, and a satisfactory driving record for the last five years.
- Maintain compliance with the District's policies regarding Conflict of Interest and Ethics.
General Requirements:
- Excellent relationship-building skills to deal effectively with individuals both inside and outside the organization.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proven ability to appropriately apply basic math and accounting principles, procedures, and techniques with some guidance.
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer software programs, particularly Excel, including pivot tables, and Word from Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and/ or customer relationship management (CRM) system such as JD Edwards and or Salesforce.

The employee must be able to physically travel between District locations and other destinations, work in evenings when required, work in hazardous conditions, and negotiate a variety of different and irregular terrain as is typical along a railway right of way. The employee may be subject to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals. The employee must be able to walk, climb, balance, bend, carry, push, reach, sit, and stand.
