Highway & Roads Market Sector Director
Primary Responsibilities
Market Sector Directors (MSD) drive our business within HDR's matrix management structure. The Highway & Roads (H&R) sector is the largest, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. It includes clients owning and operating highways, toll roads, city, town, and local roads, and bridge structures. HDR provides professional services such as bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services.
This role requires an understanding of H&R clients, their funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures at various levels. The responsibilities are divided into:
- Market leadership and business development (~70%)
- Staff development (20%)
- Support to Operations (10%)
The Director sets the vision for HDR’s strategy to expand and serve clients in this sector, supporting growth initiatives, staff development, and strategic planning in coordination with various leadership teams. They maintain communication with regional and area leaders to implement growth and operational plans.
The role involves managing relationships with state departments of transportation, local governments, and expanding contracts internationally. It includes engaging with clients, leading business development efforts, and representing HDR in industry organizations globally.
Responsibilities include:
- Overseeing strategic vision and direction for the sector
- Serving as a client manager for key accounts
- Leading projects as Principal-In-Charge
- Promoting HDR services and participating in industry associations
Staff Development
Leading an effective organization, supporting recruitment, technical excellence, and staff growth, as well as managing the sector’s P&L and resource planning.
Support to Operations
Assisting in project delivery, monitoring performance indicators, promoting QA/QC, and ensuring effective resource use.
Qualifications
Preferred: 20+ years in highway/bridge planning or engineering, PE license, leadership in industry associations.
Required: Bachelor's in Engineering, 12+ years of experience including leadership, strong communication, client management, business skills, and a commitment to HDR’s culture.
