Highway & Roads Market Sector Director

Primary Responsibilities

Market Sector Directors (MSD) are part of HDR's matrix management structure that drive our business. The HDR Highway & Roads (H&R) sector is the largest in the company, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. It includes clients owning and operating highways, toll roads, city, town, and local roads, and bridge structures. HDR provides services like bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling.

This role requires understanding of H&R clients, their funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures. Responsibilities are divided into:

  1. Market leadership and business development (~70%)
  2. Staff development (20%)
  3. Support to Operations (10%)

The Director sets the vision for HDR’s strategy to expand and serve clients in this sector, collaborating with regional and business group leadership to achieve growth, revenue, and profit goals. They facilitate strategy development, maintain communication with leadership, and support growth initiatives.

HDR’s US contracts include nearly every state department of transportation, with expansion plans into Canada, UK, Middle East, and Australia. The Director will support business development, client management, and strategic initiatives, engaging staff and strengthening HDR’s marketplace presence.

Business Development

  • Develop and implement strategic vision for the sector.
  • Manage key clients and participate in projects as Principal-In-Charge.
  • Drive marketing efforts and participate in industry associations.
  • Build strategic partnerships and support pursuit activities.

Staff Development

  • Oversee P&L and coordinate staffing and recruitment.
  • Participate in performance reviews and support staff growth.

Support to Operations

  • Assist in project delivery, monitor performance metrics, and promote quality assurance.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and technical excellence.

Qualifications

Preferred: 20+ years in highway/bridge planning or engineering, PE license, leadership in industry associations.

Required: Bachelor’s in Engineering, 12+ years industry experience, strong communication, client management, business skills, and commitment to HDR’s culture.
