Job Description The Manual Machinist is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of manual machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, and other manual equipment to produce precision components to exact specifications. The role requires reading and interpreting engineering drawings, maintaining tight tolerances, and performing quality inspections to ensure parts meet customer and production requirements.
Key Responsibilities Machine Operation & Setup Set up and operate manual machines (lathe, mill, drill press, surface grinder, etc.). Select appropriate tools, speeds, and feeds for material and job specifications. Fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical parts and assemblies. Blueprint Reading & Precision Measurement Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work orders. Measure and inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other precision instruments. Maintain tolerances typically within 0.001" or as specified.
Material Handling & Maintenance Load raw materials and safely secure workpieces. Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of machines. Identify and troubleshoot machine or process issues. Documentation & Reporting Maintain accurate production records, including job travelers and inspection logs. Report any non-conformities or issues to supervisors or quality personnel Safety & Housekeeping Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Keep work area clean and organized according to 5S standards.
Accountabilities Quality : Responsible for producing parts to specification and ensuring zero-defect output. Efficiency : Accountable for meeting production timelines and minimizing machine downtime. Safety : Must maintain a safe work environment by adhering to safety policies and procedures. Machine Care : Ensure machines are maintained, cleaned, and operated correctly to avoid unnecessary wear or damage. Continuous Improvement : Expected to participate in improvement initiatives and suggest process enhancements where applicable. Communication : Must communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, and team members to ensure smooth workflow.
Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; vocational training preferred. Minimum 25 years of manual machining experience. Strong understanding of shop mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry. Proficient with precision measuring tools. Able to lift 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
