Description:
POSITION PURPOSE
Lab Section Leader to support the Hospital Courier Department in our Laboratory.
The Couriers play a vital role in patient care by safely transporting medical specimens from collection sites to the main laboratory for timely processing. They ensure secure, compliant handling of sensitive materials while maintaining professionalism and efficiency across all routes.
The Lab Section Leader coordinates the activities of the 40 colleagues comprising the Lab Courier department. The leader also participates in the performance of tasks that fall within the range of the section.
Full-time benefited position scheduled 40 hours per week on the Day shift.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Team Supervision & Scheduling
Provides functional supervision of colleagues, including work assignments, shift transitions, and staffing levels to ensure smooth operations.
Timekeeping & Attendance Management
Serves as Kronos timekeeper, tracking absences, tardiness, and coordinating with The Hartford on leave of absence (LOA) matters, including intermittent leaves.
Performance & Development Support
Assists the manager with evaluations, StandOut® check-ins, and monitors associate performance for quality, timeliness, and productivity.
Training & Onboarding
Coordinates onboarding and on-the-job training for new colleagues; contributes to training program development and in-service education.
Recruitment & Employee Relations
Participates in interviewing, hiring, and disciplinary processes; resolves minor employee relations issues and recommends personnel actions.
Operational Oversight & Troubleshooting
Supports daily operations by solving technical and procedural issues, consulting with colleagues, and escalating unresolved problems to the manager.
Documentation & Compliance
Maintains accurate records, procedure manuals, and files in accordance with hospital policy and legal requirements.
Equipment & Process Improvement
Evaluates equipment needs, performs basic troubleshooting, and recommends new methods or procedures for routine implementation.
Client & Interdepartmental Communication
Acts as liaison for nursing units and client offices, resolving non-managerial issues related to specimens, requests, and results.
Safety, Confidentiality & Professionalism
Ensures safe work practices, maintains confidentiality of sensitive information, and fosters a collaborative, respectful work environment.
MINIUMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
Two to three years progressively more responsible related work experience.
Valid Michigan Driver’s License.
