SPEC Services, Inc. is a premier Southern California energy and infrastructure engineering firm, specializing in gas utility, refining, and midstream projects in the Western U.S. We are seeking a self-motivated and energetic applicant to lead systems engineering for a variety of energy infrastructure projects serving the Western and Southwestern United States. SPEC provides overall system planning for energy storage and transportation facilities and detailed design services to upgrade and expand existing systems and to develop new facilities.

We have an exciting new position for an experienced engineer. The position has a flexible 9 / 80 schedule with a hybrid / WFH work location, supporting the Fountain Valley office.

Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate directly with gas clients to identify project needs, develop project scoping documents, and support project execution.
  2. Lead the design and engineering of compression systems, ensuring they meet performance requirements and comply with relevant standards and regulations.
  3. Prepare and review engineering deliverables such as Process Flow Diagrams, heat and material balances, P&I Diagrams, Cause & Effect Diagrams, control philosophies, shutdown philosophies, HAZOP Studies & reports, Operation & Maintenance Manuals, etc.
  4. Prepare and review specifications and data sheets for compressors, control systems, and related equipment.
  5. Conduct feasibility studies and performance evaluations for new and retrofit compression projects.
  6. Participate in compressor, engine, and gas turbine startup, performance testing, and troubleshooting.
  7. Provide technical support to operations and maintenance teams for existing compression systems.
  8. Troubleshoot performance issues and implement corrective actions to optimize system efficiency.
  9. Conduct root cause analysis for equipment failures and implement preventive measures.
  10. Review client documents, specifications, datasheets, and verify FEED design & calculations.
  11. Prepare and review instrument data sheets and specifications (control valves, PSV’s, meters, etc.).
  12. Participate in planning, cost control, and scheduling for projects.
  13. Develop and review TIC estimates.
  14. Develop economic analysis (maintenance and energy cost) for equipment selection.
  15. Maintain effective communication and relationships with project team members and clients to ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  16. Prepare & issue RFQs, evaluate vendor quotations, and conduct technical bid analysis.
  17. Review vendor documents, drawings, datasheets, and specifications.
  18. Coordinate with equipment vendors to develop project scope and execute detailed engineering.
  19. Coordinate with torsional and acoustic analysis companies to ensure mechanical soundness and proper component selection.

Skill Requirements

  1. Strong verbal, written, and communication skills to clearly convey technical subject matter.
  2. Desire and ability to learn new skills and assume greater responsibilities.
  3. Familiarity with applicable industry codes and standards, including:

ASME - B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, BPVC Section VIII

API – 541, 610, 614, 616, 617, 618, 619, 670, 671, 682, 686, etc.

NFPA 37

  1. Knowledge of emissions control systems for engines and gas turbines.
  2. Knowledge of engine and gas turbine auxiliary systems such as jacket water, auxiliary water, fuel, starting systems (air, electric, hydraulic), lube oil, etc.
  3. Knowledge of compressor auxiliary systems like wet seals, dry seals, packing, lube oil, recycle systems, etc.
  4. Knowledge of compressor control methods such as speed control, surge control, valve pockets, valve unloaders, variable volume pockets, slide valve, throttling, etc.
  5. Knowledge of machinery monitoring systems like accelerometers, velometers, proximity sensors, phase, knock, surge systems, etc.
  6. Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  7. Project management skills, including managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  8. Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  9. Ability to visit local refinery, midstream, and gas utility project sites for data gathering and inspections, with occasional travel to farther locations.

Experience and Education Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering.
  2. 5+ years’ experience in selection, design, optimization, and troubleshooting of compressors.
  3. Experience with various types of compressors and drivers (motors, engines, turbines).
  4. Experience with emissions control systems.
  5. Experience with gas compression systems for natural gas processing, transmission, or storage.
  6. California Mechanical Professional Engineer license is strongly preferred.
  7. Energy infrastructure experience is preferred.
  8. Engineering consulting and/or equipment packaging experience is preferred.
  9. Experience with Ariel, DR Size, Leroi, Coolware, and eRCM software is preferred.
  10. A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required.

Salary Range : $90k-$140k Annually
