Senior Mechanical Engineer - Compressors and Compression Systems
SPEC Services, Inc. is a leading Southern California energy and infrastructure engineering firm, specializing in gas utility, refining, and midstream projects across the Western U.S. We are seeking a motivated and energetic engineer to lead systems engineering for energy infrastructure projects in the Western and Southwestern U.S. The role involves system planning, detailed design, and expansion of energy storage and transportation facilities.
The position offers a flexible 9/80 schedule, hybrid/WFH options, and support from our Fountain Valley office.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate with gas clients to identify project needs, develop scope, and support execution
- Lead design and engineering of compression systems, ensuring compliance with standards and performance requirements
- Prepare and review engineering deliverables such as PFDs, heat and material balances, P&ID diagrams, and reports
- Develop specifications and data sheets for compressors and control systems
- Conduct feasibility studies and performance evaluations for compression projects
- Participate in startup, testing, and troubleshooting of compressors, engines, and turbines
- Support operations and maintenance teams with technical expertise
- Troubleshoot performance issues and implement improvements
- Review client documents, specifications, and calculations
- Prepare instrument data sheets and specifications
- Plan and manage project costs and schedules
- Develop and review cost estimates and economic analyses
- Maintain effective communication with project teams and clients
- Manage RFQs, evaluate vendor quotations, and coordinate with equipment vendors
- Coordinate with analysis companies for mechanical design soundness
Skill Requirements
- Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
- Willingness to learn and take on greater responsibilities
- Knowledge of industry codes such as ASME, API, ISO, NFPA
- Understanding of emissions control, engine and turbine auxiliary systems, compressor auxiliary systems, and control methods
- Ability to work in a team and manage multiple projects
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Availability for site visits and occasional travel
Experience and Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering
- Minimum 5 years of experience with compressors, including design, optimization, and troubleshooting
- Experience with various compressor types and drivers
- Knowledge of emissions systems and natural gas processing systems
- California PE license preferred
- Energy infrastructure and consulting experience preferred
- Software skills in Ariel, DR Size, Leroi, Coolware, eRCM are a plus
- Valid driver’s license and clean record required
