Senior Mechanical Engineer - Compressors and Compression Systems

SPEC Services, Inc. is a leading energy and infrastructure engineering firm in Southern California, specializing in gas utility, refining, and midstream projects across the Western U.S. We are seeking a self-motivated engineer to lead systems engineering for energy infrastructure projects in the Western and Southwestern U.S. Our services include system planning for energy storage and transportation, as well as detailed design for system upgrades and new facilities.

The position offers a flexible 9/80 schedule with a hybrid/WFH setup, supporting our Fountain Valley office.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with gas clients to identify project needs, develop scope documents, and support execution
  • Lead design and engineering of compression systems, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations
  • Prepare and review engineering deliverables such as PFDs, heat/material balances, P&ID diagrams, control philosophies, HAZOP reports, manuals, etc.
  • Develop specifications and data sheets for compressors and control systems
  • Conduct feasibility studies and performance evaluations for compression projects
  • Participate in startup, performance testing, and troubleshooting of compressors, engines, and turbines
  • Support operations and maintenance teams with technical expertise
  • Troubleshoot performance issues and implement improvements
  • Perform root cause analysis and preventive measures for equipment failures
  • Review client documents, specifications, and FEED calculations
  • Develop instrument data sheets and specifications
  • Assist in project planning, cost control, and scheduling
  • Develop TIC estimates and economic analyses for equipment selection
  • Maintain effective communication with project teams and clients to ensure satisfaction
  • Prepare RFQs, evaluate vendor quotations, and analyze bids
  • Coordinate with vendors and analysis companies for project execution

Skill Requirements

  • Strong communication skills to convey technical information clearly
  • Willingness to learn and take on greater responsibilities
  • Familiarity with industry codes such as ASME, API, ISO, NFPA
  • Knowledge of emissions control, engine and turbine auxiliary systems, compressor systems, and control methods
  • Experience with machinery monitoring systems
  • Teamwork and project management skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in compressor design, troubleshooting, and optimization
  • Experience with various compressors, drivers, and emissions systems
  • Experience in natural gas processing, transmission, or storage systems
  • California PE license is strongly preferred
  • Experience with engineering consulting or equipment packaging is a plus
  • Familiarity with Ariel, DR Size, Leroi, Coolware, and eRCM software
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record

Salary Range: $90,000 - $140,000 annually
