What To Expect

Tesla’s Vehicle Power Electronics group is seeking a skilled and motivated Staff Mechanical Engineer to join the Drive Inverter design team. You will push our power electronics designs to their physical limits. This role demands a strong technical background, critical thinking, a passion for launching new technologies, and the ability to execute quickly and effectively.

What You'll Do

  1. Design and 3D modeling of mechanical packaged semiconductor components and assemblies.
  2. Conduct mechanical design analysis including thermal, CFD, structural, design for assembly, and design for test.
  3. Address electronics packaging issues such as electrical isolation, sealing, thermal management, interconnection, shock and vibration management, EMI, RF communications, etc.
  4. Develop engineering test plans for designs.
  5. Create drawing packages and manufacturing instructions for parts and assemblies.
  6. Assist in engineering prototype builds and component fabrication.
  7. Collaborate with mechanical, systems, electrical, digital control, manufacturing, industrial design, and test engineers to take designs from concept through prototypes to mass production.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of related industry experience, including managing or leading small teams.
  • Deep understanding of Mechanical Engineering fundamentals (heat transfer, fluids, statics, dynamics, structural design).
  • Significant experience designing and building mechanical assemblies, with a record of shipping products into volume production.
  • Knowledge of materials used in electronics packaging (metals, insulators, plastics, connectors, gaskets, thermal interface materials, potting, etc.).
  • Proficiency with 3D mechanical design tools (e.g., CATIA) and analysis tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS Icepak, StarCCM). Experience with GD&T, CATIA V5/V6, and PLM systems.
  • Experience with environmental, reliability, safety standards relevant to automotive, consumer, industrial, or residential products.
  • Experience with high-volume manufacturing processes (injection molding, stamping, diecasting) and design for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Working knowledge of Matlab and/or Python.
  • Basic understanding of electrical design fundamentals, PCBAs, high voltage mechanical design.

Expected compensation ranges from $137,680 to $256,200 annually, plus cash and stock awards. Actual offers depend on experience, market, and other factors. Details of benefits will be provided upon offer.
