Teaching Position Details This Teacher of the Visually Impaired opportunity involves providing comprehensive educational support to students with various visual impairments through our established virtual learning platform. You'll work with a manageable caseload of 44-54 students ranging from elementary through secondary levels, dedicating 35.5-37 hours weekly to direct instruction, assessment activities, and collaborative planning sessions. Your instruction will encompass critical areas including braille literacy development, assistive technology training, orientation and mobility concept reinforcement, and compensatory academic skill building. The remote format allows for individualized pacing while maintaining consistent educational support tailored to each student's specific visual and learning needs. Educational Responsibilities Primary teaching duties include developing and implementing specialized lesson plans that address individual student goals, conducting detailed assessments of functional vision capabilities, and creating accessible educational materials for various learning activities. You'll provide intensive braille instruction covering both literary and mathematical codes, teach students to effectively use screen reading software and magnification tools, and develop strategies for independent academic performance. Your collaborative responsibilities encompass working closely with general education teachers to ensure appropriate classroom modifications, facilitating virtual parent education sessions on supporting visual impairment needs, participating in IEP development and review meetings, and coordinating with related service providers to deliver comprehensive student support. Documentation of student progress and regular communication with families and school teams are integral aspects of this role. Professional Requirements Candidates must hold current Michigan Teacher of the Visually Impaired certification along with a Master's degree in Visual Impairment Education or Special Education with visual impairment specialization. Two years of verified experience providing educational services to students with visual impairments in school-based settings is required. Essential competencies include advanced skills in braille instruction and assessment, demonstrated proficiency with assistive technology applications and devices, experience conducting comprehensive functional vision evaluations, and proven ability to adapt curriculum materials for diverse learning needs. Strong virtual teaching capabilities, excellent communication skills, and comfort with remote service delivery platforms are necessary for this position.
