Shift: 12-Hour Nights | Every Other Weekend | First to Float
Contract: 20 Weeks | 36 Guaranteed Hours per Week
Position Overview
Bakersfield Memorial Hospital is seeking an experienced Travel Registered Nurse to join the 4W Cardiac Telemetry Interventional Unit . This is a high-acuity, fast-paced 30-bed unit with an average of 600 discharges per month. Travelers will manage post-cardiac intervention patients, complex cardiac conditions, and step-down level patients transferred from ICU or ER.
Unit & Patient Details
- Bed Count: 30
- Ratios: 1:4
- Support Staff: 1–2 nurse aides (nights); 2–3 nurse aides (days)
- Charge Nurse: Yes (non-management; typically non-assigned to patients when acting as charge)
- Patient Population:
- 24 hr post-CABG (observation only)
- Chest tubes, pacer wires (not removed by RN)
- Post-cath lab interventions (stents, pacemakers, EP studies, radial access, sheath pulls if competent)
- High-acuity cardiac patients, heparin drips, antiarrhythmic medications
- Overflow transfers from ICU and ER
Orientation & Floating
- Orientation:
- 2 × 12-hr shifts on home unit
- 1 day in ICU for float prep
- ½ shift on MedSurg
- Floating: To MedSurg units, Telemetry (5W), or ICU (appropriate patient assignments only)
Clinical Environment
- EMR: Cerner
- Telemetry: Spacelabs Monitoring (24/7 monitor techs; nurses interpret strips)
- Equipment: Pagers linked to call lights; internal spectra link phones
- RT & Pharmacy: 24/7 coverage; clinical pharmacists on unit days/evenings
- IV Support: ICU/ER assist with difficult IV access (no dedicated IV team)
- No Vent Management: High-flow O2 and CPAP (RT maintained)
Schedule & Compliance
- Shift Times: 7p–7:30a
- Breaks: 30-min meal (clocked out) + three 15-min breaks (per CA law)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (equivalent of 4 weekend days per 4 weeks)

Scrubs: Navy blue (jackets navy; undershirts navy/white/black)
Requirements
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Experience: Minimum 2 years recent
- Licensure: Active RN license (CA or compact eligible at time of submission)
