Req#: 9571 This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care through integrated drug distribution, clinical services, and teaching. This position prepares initial and ongoing training for pharmacists, pharmacy interns and pharmacy technicians. This position ensures staff has the tools and skills necessary to provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective pharmacy services. In partnership with the pharmacy buyer and pharmacy leaders this position is responsible for the prevention, monitoring and planning process for all drug shortages.

Job Duties

Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries. Partner with the pharmacy leadership team and frontline pharmacy staff to identify and implement strategies to forecast or lessen the impact of medication shortages. For each individual drug shortage, partner with the pharmacy leadership team and impacted service line leaders to develop a shortage mitigation plan by identifying therapeutic alternatives, opportunities to eliminate waste or methods to alter how a medication is ordered, prepared or dispensed. Develop and maintain a standardize plan for managing drug shortages including strategies for assessment, planning, coordinating, communication, implementation and monitoring. Partner with the pharmacy buyer to oversee the master drug shortages monitoring spreadsheet. Ensure department compliance with regulatory requirements for medications with a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). Conduct education to other healthcare professionals including providers, nurses, respiratory therapy as requested by the leadership team. Partner with clinical pharmacists to lead practice initiatives and updates identified from safety event submissions to mitigate future medication errors. Partner with the leadership team, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy interns and pharmacists to develop and maintain department policies and procedures. Develops and maintains pharmacy department competency assessment tools. Develops and maintains pharmacy department onboarding and training tools. Partner with the leadership team to oversee the onboarding and training of new pharmacy personnel including pharmacy technicians, pharmacy interns and pharmacists. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. Participates in the drug therapy management of medical emergencies, as needed Provides clinical pharmacy services through consultation, drug information, teaching and/or committee work. Collaborates with physicians, nurses and other members of the healthcare team to ensure appropriate medication therapy. Oversees accurate preparation and distribution of medication orders. Reviews, evaluates and interprets medication orders for appropriateness and documents clinical interventions. This position will have job duties related to direct patient care, educating healthcare providers and medication shortage management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of the following patient age groups: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Possess confidence in speaking in front of small and large groups and understands basic adult learning principles. Passionate about enhancing the knowledge and skills of the pharmacy department and our customers. Excellent written skills, communication skills, presentation skills and customer relation skills. Ability to establish rapport with pharmacy department frontline staff and leadership team. Ability to establish rapport with leaders, physicians and frontline staff throughout the organization. Ability to initiate projects, plan own activities and make decisions within the framework of the responsibility and authority of the job. Serve as a positive role model and function as a change agent toward positive pharmacy department improvements. Ability to operate audiovisual equipment, including slide projects, overhead projectors and PowerPoint applications. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Ability to manage projects through assessment, planning, implementation and monitoring. Ability to prioritize workload, effectively manage time and thrive in stressful or unfamiliar situations. Excellent critical thinking skills and positive attitude toward constructive criticism.

Professional Experience

Two years as a licensed pharmacist with enhanced clinical responsibilities preferred. Successful completion of an Accredited American Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ASHP) Residency Program preferred. Experience in staff development and/or continuing education preferred. Two years experience as an Epic end user within the last 6 months as a minimum required.

Education

Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in pharmacy, required.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

Must have current Iowa Pharmacist License or be eligible for Iowa Board of Pharmacy pharmacist licensure. Employment is contingent upon being licensed by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy by start date. Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association preferred. Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) preferred. Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
