Job Opportunity: Ice Rink Assistant Manager
The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented professional for the position of Ice Rink Assistant Manager. This role will help manage the daily operations of the Cabin John Ice Rink (Snack Bar and Pro Shop) and Cabin John Train. The Ice Rink Assistant Manager will manage the daily operations of the Cabin John Ice Rink facility by assisting the Facility Manager with ensuring that all ice programs and rentals run as scheduled on the three sheets of ice (Olympic, NHL, and studio rink); building maintenance; program administration; facility budget preparation; staff supervision (recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and evaluates) and assists with oversight of Snack Bar and Pro Shop operations. The Assistant Manager's assignments include full responsibility for the Pro Shop operations (staffing, inventory, budget, promotional materials, and staff trainings) as well as hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of seasonal staff (manager aides, skate guards, and custodial/maintenance staff). This position will also supervise the Front-End Operations Manager and Snack Bar/Miniature Train Manager. What the job will involve: Assists in the Management of the Cabin John Ice Rink Manages day-to-day facility operations and establish operating procedures. Assists the Facility Manager with scheduling leased ice contracts and ensuring that all scheduled facility programming is run on time and without interruption. Serves as manager on duty for selected shifts. Ensures the safety and security of the building and patrons. Assembles information and prepares selected reports as directed by supervisor(s). Coordinates with staff the maintenance and repairs of the facilities and grounds and ensures they are promptly addressed with minimal disruption to facility programs and schedules. Oversees and manages special events. Manages customer service activities of the facility. Sets a positive example for employees to ensure customers are treated in a prompt, professional, respectful manner. Assists with budget preparation. Assists with recruiting, hiring, training, and scheduling staff. Manages Snack Bar, Pro Shop, and Vending Operations Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and supervises staff. Selects and orders merchandise and supplies. Oversees snack bar equipment (ensures proper operation, purchases equipment, and oversees necessary repairs). Oversees pro shop equipment (ensures proper operation, purchases equipment, and oversees necessary repairs). Receives and maintains all necessary certifications (ServSafe Food Manager and ServSafe Allergens) to oversee operations. Controls inventory and ensures accuracy of sales and inventory records. Oversees daily operations. Monitors revenue and expenditures and prepares required reports. Prepares budget recommendations for the supervisor to review and approve. Programs-Schedules Facilities Assists in the scheduling of sessions and ongoing programs for the rink. Ensures that all scheduled facility programming is run on time, as scheduled daily, without interruption. Supervision of Staff Provides oversight and support of two full-time career employees (Front-End Operations Manager, Snack Bar, and Miniature Train Manager). Responsible, with the assistance of the career managers, for supervision and oversight of all seasonal staff to include the snack bar, miniature train, pro shop, manager aides, skate guards, and custodial/maintenance staff. Important Skills and Characteristics: Ability to effectively communicate and lead a team of people. Ability to synthesize data and transform it into coherent strategic work plans. Demonstrate the ability to manage complex problems. Superb written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Proficient in office software (MS Office), software for planning, scheduling, communicating (email), word processing, collecting and reporting data, preparing presentations, and researching information. Proven ability to approach and interact with people of all backgrounds, and the ability to think collaboratively with various members of the organization. Comprehensive knowledge of recreational facility management, safety and health regulations, budgeting principles, special event planning, procurement practices, cash handling, etc. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Parks and Recreation, Facility Management, Recreation Management, Education, Business Administration, Physical Education, Communication, Leisure Services, or any related field. Two (2) years of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, leisure services, or area of required specialty (e.g., arts, performing arts, equestrian, tennis, aquatics, gymnastics, ice rinks); including one (1) year as a facility manager, program coordinator or supervisor. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position. Contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require valid: (a) operating license (e.g., county pool operator, childcare license) as appropriate; (b) First Aid, CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) certifications; or (c) certifications as related to assignment (e.g., Lifeguard Instruction, Fundamentals of Gymnastics). Working Conditions: Works inside and outside an assigned facility which may operate seven days per week. Works extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays.
