Founded in 1907, the Organization of American Historians (OAH) is the largest professional organization dedicated to United States history, with a mission of promoting excellence in the scholarship, teaching and presentation of American history, encouraging wide discussion of historical questions, and advocating for history and history practitioners. The organization publishes The Journal of American History, a publication of record in the field, the quarterly member magazine The American Historian, Process: A Blog for American History, and the JAH Podcast. The OAH is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is an External Agency of Indiana University. The OAH national and publication offices are located on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington.
Job Summary Serve as the first point of contact for email and phone inquiries related to the OAH Publications Office and assist with correspondence management with authors, reviewers, and contributors to the Journal of American History and other publications. Assist with manuscript intake and management of book room logistics, including mail and tracking, and maintaining the Journal of American History reviewer database. Work closely with the executive editor, managing editor, assistant editor, and editorial assistants to ensure general workflow coordination across all publication areas. In coordination with the Executive Editor, solicit, develop, and edit content for 4 annual issues of The American Historian and oversee each issue through to publication. Oversee production logistics, including coordination with designers and printers, and managing PDF uploads of full issues and individual articles to the OAH website. Support the organization of webinars and digital content tied to magazine themes and articles. Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
Bachelor's degree. Preferred
Advanced degree in history or related humanities field. WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
2 years of publishing, administrative, program management, and/or editing experience. Preferred
2 years of experience in academic publishing in history or a closely related humanities field. SKILLS
Required
Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and coordinate with multiple stakeholders. Ability to execute administrative tasks with attention to detail. Understanding of academic or magazine publication workflows, including editing, layout, design, and production. Familiarity with editorial style and peer-reviewed journal procedures. Knowledge of publication timelines, editorial calendars, and issue management. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work and fulfill responsibilities with minimal supervision. Ability to use a computer with advanced understanding of navigating systems and databases. Preferred
Knowledge of scholarly journal publication processes, membership-based organizations, and the history profession. Work Location
Bloomington, Indiana.
This is an in-person position.
Advertised Salary
$22 - $25 per hour
Work Hours
Up to 29 hours per week.
