Job Title: Development Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Director of Development and Engagement
Work Schedule: Hybrid (one remote day per week); occasional evenings/weekends for events
Position Overview
The Development Manager supports the daily operations of the organization's development program, driving annual contributed revenue goals through donor engagement, gift processing, event coordination, data management, and communications. This role ensures the timely execution of donor appeals and correspondence, supports stewardship programs and special events, and collaborates with Finance, Membership, and Communications teams to align efforts.
Key Responsibilities
Annual Fund & Donor Communications
  • Partner with the Director of Development to create donor appeals and correspondence, including managing database exports, mail merges, and mailing production.
  • Coordinate development-related materials such as invitations, signage, banners, social media graphics, and newsletter content, ensuring brand alignment and visual appeal.
  • Monitor development inboxes, respond to donor inquiries, and maintain acknowledgment templates and pledge reminders.
Development Operations
  • Supervise data processing staff to ensure timely gift entry and electronic acknowledgment letter distribution.
  • Oversee in-house production of acknowledgment letters for major gifts ($500+) and ensure fulfillment of donor recognition.
  • Reconcile contributions with Finance and maintain accurate gift documentation and filing systems.
  • Generate monthly reports and analysis to guide fundraising strategy.
  • Maintain the development calendar, including grant application deadlines.
  • Stay current with database functionality (Raiser's Edge, Blackbaud NXT) and participate in training as needed.
Donor Stewardship & Events
  • Support planning and execution of fundraising events, including the annual gala and donor cultivation gatherings.
  • Ensure sponsors and major donors receive promised benefits and timely stewardship.
Online Giving & Digital Engagement
  • Manage online donation platforms and giving forms.
  • Ensure accurate flow of online giving data into the donor database, troubleshooting as needed.
  • Collaborate with Communications to maintain and update development-related web pages.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
  • Oversee operations of community engagement programs such as the children's library and reading room, including volunteer coordination and programming.
  • Collaborate with Membership, Finance, and Communications teams to integrate development priorities into organizational initiatives.
Requirements
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 3-5 years of experience in development, with strong emphasis on Annual Fund strategy and direct mail campaigns.
  • Event planning or fundraising event experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Raiser's Edge and Blackbaud NXT preferred.
  • Familiarity with Canva or similar design software a plus.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion for plants, horticulture, or environmental causes desirable.
