Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Psychiatric Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, CPI (preferred) Must-Have: Acute/inpatient or state hospital experience, good de-escalation skills, strong communication skills, adolescent experience preferred Description: This unit has 25 licensed beds, currently utilizing 3 adult beds and 6 adolescent beds. The nurse to patient ratio is 3:1 for adults (could increase to 7 patients) and 6:1 for adolescents. Patient populations include adolescents and adults, with common diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, including alcohol, other substances, psychosis, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other behavioral or personality disorders. Experience with IVs is very rare; travelers do not have to possess this experience, although it is a plus. There is not always a charge nurse or house supervisor on each shift, and travelers are not typically expected to take on a charge role. Mechanical restraints and seclusion are used rarely on this unit. Mental health technicians or aides are available, with staffing ratios qualifying for 2 aides when the unit is full with 9 patients. Occupational therapy services are provided Monday through Friday, along with social work support. Respiratory therapy is available for patients needing oxygen or treatments. There are no telemetry or monitor technicians on this unit, and registered nurses are not required to read their own strips. Shifts include 7a-7p, 7p-7a, and others, with self-scheduling based on seniority. Weekend and holiday requirements are every other week. Nurses are expected to assist with 15-minute rounds and be directly involved in patient care rather than remaining at the nurses' station. Attributes that contribute to success in this unit include patience and the ability to manage anger effectively. The unit operates with strict safety protocols and emergency buttons for support. Candidates must comply with radius rules and cannot work full-time, part-time, or PRN with any associated facilities. All time-off requests must be submitted upfront, and additional requests will not be approved after submission. Charting is done through an electronic system. A BSN is not required for this position.
