The unit encompasses various intensive care specialties. Patient placement is determined based on bed availability, not reason for admission. The staffing ratio in the ICU is typically 1:2, with occasional 1:3 for ICU patients. In instances of low census, floating to the cardiac unit may occur, which operates on a 1:4 staffing ratio. Floating to the emergency department may also happen to care for patients held there with similar patient ratios. Internal review of applicants without required certifications is still possible.
