Overview Position: Assistant Resident Director (ARD) – full-time live-in position at UC Santa Barbara. The ARD is responsible for assisting the Resident Director (RD) with implementing the student development program in campus housing. Under the RD's supervision, the ARD uses a curricular approach and equity mindset to facilitate student wellness, development, and belonging in a residential community. The contract term is 12 months (August - July) with the opportunity for a renewal of one additional term. The ARD may be assigned to a community that does not have students residing in the summer and will perform duties to assist the department with fall opening preparation for the upcoming academic year. Primary responsibilities include:

Assisting RD in the implementation of a curricular approach in the development and education of a residential community ranging from 500 to 1,800 residents.

Providing support in student staff training.

Overseeing community development, resident engagement and curricular initiatives.

Advising the hall/community council consisting of student leaders.

Assisting in basic counseling, advising, and referrals for student concerns.

Supporting student conduct adjudication and addressing emergencies and crisis situations.

Developing effective working relationships with department and campus colleagues.

Completing a comprehensive, self-directed professional development plan to further develop skills and competencies.

Supervision of student staff.

Required Qualifications

1-3 years Demonstrated experience and ability to constructively engage and lead others in complex issues related to social justice, access, inclusion and equity within a campus community.

1-3 years Experience in planning and delivering programs or activities that foster student engagement and community development.

1-3 years Experience in a student leadership role on a college or university campus.

1-3 years Experience in basic student/peer advising and counseling.

Ability to constructively engage others in complex social justice, access, inclusion, and equity issues on campus.

Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across a large, multifunctional department.

Comprehensive knowledge of UCSB campus resources and support services.

Knowledge of the day-to-day operations of a student housing community.

Knowledge of and/or experience working within a residential curriculum campus.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree

Experience in supervising student staff.

Interest in pursuing a career in Higher Education and/or Student Affairs.

Special Conditions of Employment

The ARD is a full-time live-in position with on-call responsibilities. The contract term is 12 months with the opportunity for a renewal of one additional term. This position may require night and weekend hours as needed, with flexible time off to offset these hours.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time

35% Community Development & Education - The ARD will assist RD in implementing a comprehensive and inclusive educational plan aligned with the department's residential curricular approach, operationalize educational and social initiatives to foster belonging among all residents (including underserved student populations), maintain a visible presence to build trust and address needs, oversee community development efforts of the Resident Assistant staff with responsible use of funds, support student leaders of the hall/community council, and help plan and facilitate student staff training.

30% Advising & Supervising - Advise hall/community council meetings and activities to ensure inclusive operations, meet with executive leaders to set meeting agendas, recruit and coordinate elections, provide guidance on group dynamics, distribute information about campus services, and supervise/evaluate Resident Assistants and related staff.

20% Student Conduct & Crisis Response - Assist in adjudicating conduct cases, support students’ mental health and connect them with resources, coordinate with campus staff to provide support for students of concern, and mediate roommate or community conflicts.

10% Departmental Support - Participate in recruitment and selection for staff, collaborate with campus partners to support daily operations, strategize with the RD and co-ARD, manage budgets for programming and staff development, evaluate student staff and curricular efforts, and serve as a liaison to other campus departments. Summer project support as needed.

5% Community Safety - Serve on the on-call team for after-hours support in campus housing year-round, act as a first responder to crises, and assist with security measures during events.
