HDR’s Highway & Roads market sector is the largest in the company, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. The Market Sector Director leads the sector's strategy, growth and operations, partnering with regional leadership to expand HDR's transportation services and client base in the US, Canada, the UK, the Middle East and Australia. Primary Responsibilities
The Market Sector Director is part of HDR’s matrix management structure and drives growth for the Highway & Roads market sector. Responsibilities are divided into three areas: Market leadership and business development (approximately 70%) Staff development (20%) Support to Operations (10%) The Market Sector Director sets the vision for HDR’s strategy to expand services within the market sector and collaborates with regional leadership to implement growth initiatives, develop staff, and achieve market sector goals. The Director coordinates with business group leadership, operational leadership, client managers, and practice group leaders, and reports to the Transportation Business Group Market Strategy Director. The role involves maintaining regular communication with region and area leadership to execute strategic growth plans at the market sector level. In the US, HDR maintains contracts with state departments of transportation and with numerous municipalities, counties and cities; HDR is expanding to Canada, the UK, parts of the Middle East and Australia. HDR’s market sector professionals engage with clients to bring expertise in bridge and highway design, traffic and transportation planning, construction management and administration, and to integrate HDR services including advisory, environmental, strategic communications, facilities and more. The Highway and Roads Market Sector Director is responsible for supporting area business development and client management while defining and implementing growth initiatives, coordinating best practices and quality professional services, and enhancing HDR’s brand in the marketplace. The role requires engaging a wide spectrum of HDR employees and reinforcing HDR’s image with clients and in markets. Oversee the creation and implementation of the market sector’s strategic vision and direction, aligning technical and professional services with business group and operations leadership. Serve as the Client Manager for selected key clients within the market sector. Engage in selected projects as Principal-In-Charge. Promote HDR’s services to clients in the market sector in collaboration with client managers. Participate as a member of the Transportation Business Group Management Team. Work with Regional Business Group Directors on area goals and market sector initiatives. Drive client development and pursuit processes with client managers and business development leaders. Support area and strategic pursuits through client relationship development and pursuit activities. Participate in industry associations at a leadership level and model HDR’s engagement in business and community organizations. Identify key investments (acquisitions and technology) to maintain HDR’s leadership position. Monitor marketing capabilities and ensure the market sector collaborates with departments to achieve goals. Develop relationships with industry counterparts in other consulting organizations. Develop and maintain relationships with senior leadership in key client organizations. Lead HDR’s presence and representation with industry organizations in the US, Canada, EMEA and APAC regions (e.g., AASHTO, IBTTA, NASTO, SASHTO, WASHTO, among others). Staff Development Responsibilities
Lead an organization that performs to support clients, win work, and provide opportunities for staff growth and development. Support area leadership with the identification and recruitment of prospective future market sector employees. Assume responsibility for Global Market Sector P&L in coordination with local area managers and coordinate work-sharing among departments. Coordinate staffing/recruiting plans for key hires and assist local leadership with local hires. Approve all key/strategic hires in the market sector. Participate in Annual Performance Conversations for key market sector leaders. Support to Operations
Assist Regional Business Group Directors and area Business Group managers in delivering professional services for area projects within the market sector. Drive client management, monitor market sector profit and loss, review staff assignments, encourage work-sharing, ensure project delivery and support QA/QC programs. Monitor performance indicators such as NFE/NFB, profit, unbilled revenue, AR, losses and investments; manage staff workload and optimize resource use. Assist with contract review on key projects to ensure risk management, proper staffing, quality reviews and claims resolution. Promote Quality Assurance/Quality Control and provide technical expertise to support marketing and project activities. Facilitate the dissemination of “lessons learned.” Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a closely related field A minimum of 12 years of industry experience including leadership Strong written and verbal communication skills Strong skills in client management, client development and a proven track record of growing/leading a practice Strong business skills; budgeting, staffing and operations Strong ability to analyze the marketplace and strategically position HDR Active participation in HDR’s employee-owned culture is a must Preferred Qualifications
