Department Summary The Department of Art and Art History at San José State University is seeking part-time Sculpture faculty with expertise in three-dimensional design, metal-casting, welding, moldmaking, woodworking, mixed-media sculpture, ceramics, glass, jewelry/metalsmithing, robotics, electronics, interactive sculpture, installation art, and CNC-based fabrication. The successful candidate will teach within a dynamic department that encourages cross-disciplinary practice. We seek applicants with a contemporary, experimental art practice and a desire to contribute to curriculum development. SJSU’s Spatial Art program is known for its exceptional fabrication facilities and breadth of offerings in sculptural media.

Brief Description Of Duties

Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).

Offer all classes as scheduled throughout the semester/term in the mode listed in the schedule (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Required Qualifications

Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture or a related field.

Clear demonstration of artistic achievement, evidenced by a record of national or international exhibitions.

University-level teaching experience is required.

Exceptional technical and fabrication skills, with comprehensive knowledge of equipment and material safety.

Strong writing skills and ability to direct and assess student writing within a studio context.

Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population through experience with diverse students.

Address the needs of a diverse student population through course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

Preferred Qualifications

Encouragement of critical thinking and iterative concept development within class projects; openness to interdisciplinary collaboration within the Department of Art and Art History.

Significant portfolio of creative work with research interests in emerging areas of practice and theory, and in technology's and craft's evolving roles in art.

Anticipated Starting Salary

L-A / Range 2 - $5,507 to $5,959

L-B / Range 3 - $6,221 to $7,481

L-C / Range 4 - $6,825 to $9,431

L-D / Range 5 - $8,593 to $10,347

Note: Range salaries above are anticipated monthly salaries for full-time AY faculty; part-time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester. See the Faculty Salary Schedule for more information.

Conditional Offer The work is located in California and requires commuting to campus. Employment is contingent upon eligibility to work in the United States.
