Overview PSI is the largest privately owned shipyard in Hawaii, with two of the largest dry docks in the state. We have been in business since 1944 and have a large labor force of skilled craftsman with a full support staff of professionals who comprise of engineering, project management, QA, EHS, accounting, contracts, and human resources.

Responsibilities

The Welding Engineer will work directly with project engineers, structural and pipe departments, and quality assurance to provide welding support for construction and repair projects.

This position provides weld engineering support for the company’s ship repair and other projects.

General knowledge obtained through undergraduate studies in engineering

Skills/Technical Knowledge

Good attitude and personality with excellent interpersonal skills

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

Able to understand verbal or written instructions given and to perform correctly

Ability to handle multiple tasks and balance priorities

Work independently to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical welding issues during steel fabrication projects and repair

Develop and qualify Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) in compliance with NAVSEA, AWS D1.1, ASME, MIL-STD, and ABS standards for structural and pipe welding

Select appropriate welding methods (Gas Metal Arc Welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Tungsten Inert Gas Welding and Flux-Cored Arc Welding) based on material, cost, and requirements for steel and aluminum structures and pipe

Work with Estimating and Production to interpret contract and design requirements to prepare professional-grade documentation and deliverables

Monitor welding production processes to ensure adherence to quality standards and participate in root cause analysis of weld failures or nonconformance

Supervise and guide welders to ensure compliance with welding processes

Support the development and implementation of NDT procedures including visual inspection, RT, UT, PT, and MT to validate weld integrity

Participate in product improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing weld quality, reducing rework, and increasing efficiency, including integrating semi-automatic and automatic welding technology

Coordinate with quality assurance, planning, production, and NAVSEA and ABS representatives to validate welding methods and inspection criteria

Manage and develop welder workmanship and technology training to increase production rates

Education, Training and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; or High School Diploma/GED with 13 years of relevant experience

Minimum of 4 years of experience with increasing responsibility in welding or shipbuilding engineering

Supervisory experience preferred

Six Sigma or LEAN certification preferred

Qualification/Requirements

Must show proof of your legal right to work in the United States

This position requires US Citizenship due to security clearance required for base access

Must be able to successfully obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

Must be able to successfully obtain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) Credential to gain access to federally controlled work sites

All candidates must submit to and pass a post-offer drug screening and a background check before employment begins. Failure to complete any of these steps will result in disqualification

Valid State of Hawaii REAL ID-Compliant Drivers’ License in good standing, Class 3 or higher or a valid U.S. Passport in addition to a valid Hawaii Driver’s License, if you do not have a REAL ID-Compliant Driver’s License

Candidates must have access to reliable transportation to get to work and other job sites on time for the start of shift
