Overview
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST (BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CONSULTANT) – Defense Health Agency, Barksdale Air Force Base, LA. This position is a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) within the Primary Care Behavioral Health PCBH program that provides integrated behavioral health services to Military Health System beneficiaries. The Primary Care Behavioral Health Program provides a team-based approach to healthcare by integrating behavioral health providers and registered nurses into Primary Care Clinics to deliver evidence-based biopsychosocial assessment, treatment, prevention and management of behavioral health problems and biopsychosocially influenced health conditions for Military Health System beneficiaries. Responsibilities
Serve as a Clinical Psychologist Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) for the Clinic and PCBH program and provide mental health diagnoses in accordance with the DSM when differential diagnosis is required. Provide individual and group treatment using modalities such as brief problem‑focused interventions, cognitive‑behavioral therapy, and psychoeducational classes; assess acute mental health and behavioral medicine conditions and document care in accordance with SOPs and DoD, DHA PCBH, Federal and state regulations. Assess and provide intervention for individuals with a wide range of chronic medical conditions and behavioral health issues; deliver targeted and efficient appointments; perform biopsychosocial evaluations and conduct outpatient group classes (stress management, relaxation, assertive/social skills training, smoking cessation, substance use interventions) and evidence-based treatments for anxiety, depression, posttraumatic symptoms and related behavioral health conditions. Participate in quality assurance activities; provide psychological and clinical consultation to physicians and other professionals; educate clinic staff through trainings and briefings; conduct meetings to review level of care and evaluate and approve referrals; establish cooperative agreements among providers; monitor community resources; use objective behavioral outcome measures to evaluate progress in treatment. Provide evidenced-based individual treatment and psychoeducational classes; consult with primary care providers regarding treatment options to optimize health outcomes; assist with high‑risk patients such as suicide risk, trauma history, and co‑occurring substance use disorders; conduct PCBH model treatment, monitor and document treatment goals, and determine modalities. Develop and evaluate treatment processes and procedures, information and education processes, and institute changes to increase effectiveness; evaluate treatment goals and dispositions for severe cases; provide structure for case staffing and consult with staff as needed; establish policies for case consultation. Execute performance initiatives through revision of clinical standards and procedures; perform quality management/quality assurance duties to meet Joint Commission requirements; evaluate clinical records and instrument scoring; monitor environment of care and risk management issues; establish and execute performance initiatives; collaborate with the primary care team to enhance same-day warm handoffs and overall PCBH penetration; monitor productivity and outcomes. Establish and monitor objective behavioral outcome measures; evaluate and revise SOPs; evaluate educational materials for staff and patients; provide consultation on interpretation of outcome measures and screening instruments; develop and deliver professional development activities and in-service trainings on PCBH topics. Basic Requirement for Clinical Psychologist (Behavioral Health) : Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology. Specialized Experience : One year of specialized experience which includes providing consultation and/or assessment of patients with behavioral health issues; conducting individual and/or group therapy; and collaborating with other healthcare professionals. This definition is typical of the next lower grade in the federal service (GS-12). Substitution : Some federal jobs allow substitution of education for experience; for this job substitution is not permitted. You must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone. Licensure : This position requires a current, active, valid, unrestricted clinical license to practice psychology independently in the United States.
