Sanitation Manager
Job Purpose Support the company's sanitation food safety program by focusing on proper cleaning and sanitizing of plant equipment and building in a manner that meets and complies with all food safety policies, FDA and OSHA regulations.
Essential Functions
- Provide leadership to the sanitation department ensuring employees are organized and trained to complete work effectively and on time.
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure all work is completed as needed.
- Assume necessary operational and administrative duties in the absence of immediate supervisor.
- Serve as backup when Sanitors are on leave (emergency, vacation, sick and/or FMLA).
- Perform basic machine disassembly/setup for cleaning (e.g., covers, piping, cover electrical with plastic).
- Ensure all cleaning tasks are performed per SSOPs; verify cleaning SSOPs when required.
- Ensure MSS projects are completed on time, prioritize/schedule MSS projects for team completion by month's end, and review and audit MSS.
- Perform pre-ops on machines and train on proper pre-op inspections and proper ATP swabbing.
- Recognize and address equipment needing deep cleaning, notify proper departments, and ensure areas are cleaned; update MSS as needed and ensure compliance to MSS.
- Fully train Sanitors/Production on proper cleaning of lines using the 7 steps to proper food plant sanitation and SSOPs.
- Train others on CIP system and verify cleaning is being completed per SSOP.
- Train others on chemical titration; manage chemical inventory; work with chemical rep on training, new products, and issues facing sanitation.
- Write SSOPs for new equipment; update and verify SSOPs as needed.
- Write intensified cleaning procedures and ensure proper cleaning in a timely manner.
- Work with Quality Assurance department when environmental issues arise in the plant.
- Assist with third party audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections.
- Track payroll, time off/vacation requests, and attendance for department.
- Work with HR regarding personnel and performance issues for department.
- Report employee safety, food safety, and quality problems to appropriate personnel.
- Support food safety program, quality standards, and legality of manufactured products.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Education, Experience, Competencies)
- 5+ years working in a food plant as a sanitor cleaning equipment/machines/building and cleaning for MSS completion and upcoming audits; previous experience with 3rd party audits.
- PCQI trained; if not, willing to complete training.
- HACCP certification preferred; if not, willing to complete training.
- GFSI audit experience.
- Sanitation training from a reputable establishment (e.g., Ecolab).
- Knowledge of common facility pathogens: Listeria, Salmonella, etc.
- Certified to operate a skyjack and drive a forklift.
- Proven experience in a leadership/supervisory role.
- Advanced knowledge of pre-rinse/wash/rinse/sanitize steps
3rd Shift: Tuesday - Saturday (10:00pm - 6:30am)
