Chief Operating Officer Meedan is seeking a strategic, proactive, and dependable

Controller

to meticulously execute all financial administration and budgeting, create and manage financial and accounting system controls and standards, ensure timely financial and statistical reports for management and board use, and manage day-to-day financial operations. This role will lead the transition of Meedan’s financial operations from an outsourced model to a fully in-house system. With oversight from the COO, the Controller oversees the maintenance of internal controls and is responsible for the integrity of the organization’s financial recordkeeping. We are looking for a dynamic leader who is willing and able to address complex accounting and financial matters while building our internal finance infrastructure. Responsibilities Manages the complete accounting process, including journal entries, month-end and year-end close, general ledger, bank and balance sheet reconciliations, and annual audit. Owns and executes all day-to-day bookkeeping responsibilities, including accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), payroll processing, expense reimbursements, bill payments, and reconciliation tasks. Manages the budget process (budget development and forecasting), monitors progress, and provides variance analysis and operational metrics. Prepares monthly and annual financial statements and supports the preparation of board reporting. Leads the transition from outsourced financial services to a fully in-house accounting function. Serves as the organization’s primary financial representative and leads preparation for the annual audit and tax filings (Form 990/990T and state filings) in coordination with an external accounting firm. Manages financial administration of federally and internationally funded programs, including financial training, monitoring, and compliance. Reviews contracts to ensure alignment with Meedan’s internal financial policies. Ensures compliance with international, federal, state, and local regulations. Ensures data security, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance in financial systems. Responds to inquiries from funders and government agencies related to grants and taxes. Manages fiscal audit reviews of federally and internationally funded programs. Ensures that net asset releases for gifts with donor restrictions are properly recorded. Maintains the organization’s banking relationships. Other duties as assigned, based on organizational needs and priorities. Required Experience & Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and strong knowledge of GAAP required; CPA and/or MBA preferred. At least 10 years of relevant experience, including managing nonprofit finance and accounting functions. Proficiency with Sage Intacct; experience with other systems (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, MIP) and the ability to lead system transitions. Hands-on experience managing AP, AR, payroll, reconciliations, budgeting, and audits. Familiarity with international donors, grant compliance, and 990 preparation a plus. Strong analytical, communication, and policy development skills. Comfortable working in a remote, global team and adapting to evolving systems and processes.
