Sanitation Crew Leader I

The City of Greenville's Public Works Department is looking for a Sanitation Crew Leader I. The purpose of this position is to serve as a lead employee of the sanitation crew and to provide safe and efficient operation of assigned heavy equipment used in the collection of solid waste.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Examples of Duties
  • Operates a mechanical side-loading packer truck to collect solid waste on a designated route, including streets and alleys;
  • Operates a rear-loading packer truck to collect uncontained refuse in a designated area;
  • Operates other assigned equipment as needed;
  • Detects, identifies, and reports improper equipment performance and makes necessary operational adjustments;
  • Leads and assists collection crews;
  • Cleans equipment after task completion;
  • Assists the supervisor in regard to heavy equipment operations; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience operating various light to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment (prior supervisory/crew leader experience preferred). OR
  • The ability to read and write sufficiently to complete required tasks and at least five years of experience operating various light to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment (prior supervisory/crew leader experience preferred).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of: state and local laws pertaining to the operation of equipment on highways.
  • Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operations.
  • Hazards, safety rules, and precautions involved in the operation of sanitation vehicles and equipment.
  • Operations of heavy equipment used in solid waste collection.
  • The geographic layout of the City.
  • Skilled in: safe operation of trucks and equipment assigned to the position.
  • Completing minor adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Managing one's own time and the time of others efficiently.
  • Ability to: perform strenuous work requiring good physical condition.
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Direct the work of assigned crew members.
  • Prepare simple records.
  • Communicate courteously with the public on sensitive sanitation matters.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and other employees.
  • Operate assigned navigation equipment and read and follow road maps.
  • Clean equipment using appropriate materials such as a high-pressure hose when needed.
  • Work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Meet the mental and physical demands of the job.
Special Requirements
  • Valid N.C. Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and acceptable driving record at time of hire.
