PURPOSE
Under the supervision of the CFO and in accordance with organizational policies and applicable regulations, the Vice President of Housing Accounting oversees the financial reporting for over 340 Housing properties. This role manages and develops teams responsible for accounting, real estate tax, accounts payable, and support functions.
The position involves implementing internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting compliant with policies and US GAAP. Responsibilities include general ledger, financial reporting, audits, tax preparation, accounts payable, ERP systems, and real estate and sales/use tax related to affordable housing.
This role collaborates with operational and senior executives to support the organization's mission and values, leading teams to meet organizational goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Oversee financial operations for 340+ properties, ensuring accurate monthly results, year-end audits, and tax compliance. Manage Accounts Payable, including vendor setup, payments, 1099, and unclaimed funds reporting (approx. 100,000 payments annually). Manage real estate tax assessments and property valuations.
- Hire, coach, train, and develop team members. Prioritize and delegate tasks, supporting team growth aligned with organizational goals.
- Gather information for accurate financial reporting, manage stakeholder relationships, and develop engagement plans to support business needs.
- Ensure adherence to GAAP in accounting policies and procedures. Maintain internal controls to support compliance and minimize audit findings and deficiencies.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting to government agencies, bond trustees, and lenders, complying with all specific reporting requirements.
- Develop and maintain systems, procedures, and policies to ensure compliance with company guidelines and improve operational efficiency without sacrificing accuracy.
- Plan and prioritize work, advise on non-routine transactions, and review new acquisitions, refinancing, and development plans for proper accounting treatment.
- Navigate ERP systems and other technology tools, including implementing new modules or solutions.
- Maintain professionalism, manage time effectively, lead by example, and participate in problem-solving activities.
- Adhere to all policies, procedures, and regulations, including those outlined in the Employee Information Guide and facility handbooks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in accounting; CPA or MBA preferred.
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in the affordable housing industry, with 8+ years in management.
- Strong communication, comprehension, computer, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office.
- CPA licensure preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Typical office environment. Physical activities include sitting, standing, walking, and occasional lifting or carrying up to 25 lbs. The role requires frequent sitting, occasional climbing, stooping, pushing, pulling, and driving.
