Fitness Instructor - Aquatics
The Fitness Instructor - Aquatics is responsible for providing instruction to participants of various ages and abilities for water fitness classes. Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. The full salary range for this position is $21.83 - $27.72 hourly. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

General competencies include demonstrating knowledge of water fitness class instruction, providing a safe and exercise-enhanced environment for participants, consistently providing excellent guest service, demonstrating excellent communication skills, motivating participants and maintaining a high level of energy during classes, demonstrating knowledge of safe heart ratios and perceived exertion scales, utilizing warm-up and cool-down exercises to safely engage class in exercises while minimizing injuries.
Essential job functions include providing proper instruction of water fitness classes, setting up and tearing down class equipment provided by the center, monitoring heart rate of participants and providing proper warm-up and cool-down exercises, incorporating strength building and cardio activities into the routine as appropriate for the intended purpose of a class, interacting with class participants, and maintaining regular and punctual attendance. Other duties and responsibilities include maintaining all required certifications and attending scheduled staff meetings. Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.
Education, experience, skills, formal training, licenses, and certifications required include First Aid, CPR and AED certification by the first day of actual employment. Preferred experience includes previous experience teaching aerobics or water fitness and nationally recognized aerobics or water fitness certification(s). Physical requirements include constant submersion in the water while teaching classes and occasional sitting, standing, and walking throughout pool area to observe patrons during classes, constant near and far acuity to observe pools for possible troubled swimmers and safety hazards; constant hearing to be aware of troubled individuals that may be out of line of sight, occasional lifting of ten (10) pounds from floor to overhead to move equipment and supplies; occasional lifting of up to seventy-five (75) pounds from floor to chest to assist in moving furniture, equipment, and patrons on backboards, occasionally push and/or pull seventy-five (75) pounds to remove individuals from pool area in an emergency situation, and set up bleachers for events and lane ropes for lap swim. Working conditions include frequent exposure to pool water, occasional lifting up to seventy-five (75) pounds and the possible lifting of an injured individual, frequent exposure to noise levels that may cause distractions, high public contact position requiring adequate spoken interaction with the public and pool guests, ability to work in a high humidity and heat environment for long periods. Required materials and equipment include water fitness equipment such as belts, barbells, gloves, microphone, and stereo equipment. Pre-employment requirements include candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, and substance screen.
