Job Description
The Director of the Externships Program oversees all aspects of the Law School’s Externship Program, a crucial component of the experiential learning offerings.
The Director coordinates three interconnected components: (1) Advising law students seeking externships (domestic & international) and overseeing their supervision; (2) Working with field placement and supervisors to coordinate placements and ensure compliance with policies; (3) Managing and advising adjunct faculty who teach externship seminars. The Program Director ensures compliance with ABA Accreditation Standards. Each semester, about 55 students extern, completing approximately 350 credits.
This role involves working with students, faculty, alumni, staff, and supervisors at field placements. The position oversees approximately 10 faculty annually and makes hiring recommendations for adjuncts.
Essential functions include:
Developing relationships with employers and judiciary; recruiting and supporting externship placements, including in BC/Dublin and BC in DC programs.
Providing academic advising and supervising students during externships.
Managing program processes to ensure ABA compliance; collecting and analyzing data.
Managing tracking platforms for placements and advising notes.
Creating and updating program materials and website content.
Assisting in faculty recruitment and course syllabus development.
Maintaining relationships with externship sites and supervisors.
Evaluating the quality of externship experiences and intervening when necessary.
Salary range: $83,950 to $104,950, commensurate with experience.
Requirements
JD from an accredited law school
Excellent writing, editing, public speaking skills, and ability to work with diverse constituents, including mentoring students
Experience managing and developing legal programs
Minimum five years in career placement, externships/internships, or experiential learning
Externship seminars are held in the evenings; occasional travel to field placements will be required.
