Overview Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for CommunityGiving. This full-time, on-site role with hybrid flexibility is based in St. Cloud, MN. CommunityGiving provides centralized services and specialized expertise to its partner community foundations, strengthening their ability to address local needs and create lasting impact. Scion Executive Search has been retained to conduct this immediate search for the incoming CFO for CommunityGiving.

POSITION OVERVIEW The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a strategic and mission-driven leader, overseeing the financial, accounting, and investment systems of CommunityGiving and its partners. This pivotal role ensures that all financial operations are secure, efficient, and effective, while fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and support across the organization.

Bringing progressive nonprofit sector experience, the CFO balances technical expertise in fund accounting, budgeting, grant processes, and compliance with a broader vision for advancing CommunityGiving’s mission of strengthening communities. The CFO not only safeguards the organization’s financial integrity but also identifies opportunities to streamline systems, adopt innovative technologies, and maximize impact through strategic investment management.

Working closely with the CEO, board, and partner foundations, this leader plays a critical role in managing assets, including trust vehicles and charitable investment funds, while exploring innovative approaches to enhance long-term sustainability. The ideal candidate is a hands-on, strategic leader, equally adept at rolling up their sleeves as they are shaping vision, who will position CommunityGiving to expand its impact, embrace innovation, and deliver enduring value to the communities it serves.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide strategic leadership in finance, accounting, and investments to ensure secure, efficient, and effective systems across CommunityGiving and its partner foundations.

Monitor industry trends and adopt innovative technologies to strengthen efficiency, transparency, and impact.

Oversee fund accounting, investment accounts, and non-traditional gift vehicles, ensuring compliance and accuracy.

Ensure adherence to legal and regulatory standards, including FASB compliance, board policies, and internal controls.

Lead the budgeting process in collaboration with organizational leaders and oversee accurate, timely financial reporting.

Serve as the primary contact for financial, investment, and audit-related matters; liaise with external auditors and investment managers.

Manage cash flow, reconciliations, and risk while maximizing returns through sound cash management strategies.

Interpret financial information for leadership, staff, and committees, providing accessible, actionable insights.

Support and guide the Finance and Investment Committees; prepare materials and serve as staff facilitator to the board.

Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team, fostering a collaborative, professional, and growth-oriented environment.

Collaborate with Human Resources to oversee payroll, benefits, and personnel policies while ensuring compliance and accuracy.

Safeguard organizational data, manage insurance policies, and evaluate potential partner foundations for integration.

Represent CommunityGiving in philanthropic networks and professional associations at the regional, state, and national levels.

Provide peer and technical assistance to partner foundations, strengthening systems, education, and collaborative opportunities.

Champion CommunityGiving’s mission by aligning financial strategy with organizational goals, fostering innovation, and positioning the organization for long-term sustainability.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in nonprofit finance, investment oversight, or estate planning.

Demonstrated executive or senior leadership experience.

Background in community foundation or nonprofit accounting strongly preferred.

Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field required; CPA designation a plus.

Demonstrated expertise in fund accounting principles and accrual-based accounting systems.

Strong familiarity with FASB regulations as applied to public foundations and nonprofit organizations.

Proficiency with integrated accounting software and systems, including general ledger, accounts payable, gifts, grants, and related modules.

Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Dynamics (or similar platforms).

Proven ability to deliver accurate financial reporting with exceptional attention to detail.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial data clearly to diverse stakeholders.

Skilled in prioritizing, organizing, and problem-solving across multiple projects and deadlines.

Demonstrated capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS This full-time position provides the opportunity to join an extraordinary work environment characterized by teamwork and mutual respect. With a competitive salary ranging from

$145,000 to $195,000 (DOE) , this role also includes a comprehensive benefits package. This package encompasses medical and dental coverage, life and long-term disability insurance, retirement contributions with matching, HSA support, flexible benefits, paid time off, 13 paid holidays, family leave, identity protection, and additional perks.
