The Position
The Merrick Medical Center (MMC) Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for providing financial leadership to the organization. The position works closely with the CEO to ensure strong financial performance by establishing appropriate performance standards, qualifications and expectations. Ensures legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions. Responsible for proper planning and allocation of resources under their control, including the preparation and monitoring of the annual operating budget and financial objectives consistent with MMC’s strategic plan. All duties are performed in accordance with MMC’s standards and behaviors.
Responsibilities
Commit to the mission, vision, beliefs, and demonstrate Bryan Health and MMC core values.
Oversee performance standards/metrics for each department within the division; coach and assist managers in planning and performance improvement.
Understand accounting and financial reporting regulations related to governmental programs.
Identify internal controls, monitor compliance, and coordinate annual audit, cost report preparation, and Form 990 with outside auditing firms as needed.
Maintain knowledge of Medicare cost reporting; understand cost report compliance and opportunities to maximize cost reimbursement.
Evaluate clinic financial statements and operations, including physicians’ productivity reports and employment contracts; prepare analyses.
Collaborate with the corporate accounting team to develop and maintain the accounting system for evaluating department costs and profitability; provide information for managerial decisions.
Compile information and perform comparative analysis to other hospitals and clinics; establish benchmarks for evaluating processes and productivity throughout MMC.
Analyze financial data; present timely financial reports; communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial status to senior leadership.
Work with the CEO and senior leadership to use data analytics to develop business plans for new or growing opportunities.
Support the MMC CEO in engaging the board and committees on issues and trends in financial operating models.
Assist management in managing productivity and volumes by providing resource consumption and unit cost reports.
Evaluate the financial feasibility of services and programs; access data sources to prepare analytical reports and special studies.
Evaluate and manage MMC’s payer contracts and advise leadership on material changes in contractual estimates or issues.
Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly financials for distribution and presentation to the President, MMC management, Bryan Health, and the MMC Board of Directors.
Develop relationships with MMC and Bryan Health auditing firms and ensure annual audits are performed timely and without controllable adjustment entries.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have served as a chief financial officer (CFO) or in a leadership role with progressive responsibility for the organization’s accounting, finance, and budgeting processes for a minimum of five (5) years, preferably in a Critical Access Hospital. A bachelor’s degree in accounting, healthcare administration, business, or a related field is required. An active CPA is preferred. Strong leadership and operational experience is required.

MMC and its clinics in Central City and Fullerton are primary sources of healthcare for the rural communities it serves.
The facility opened a new $27 million, 51,307 square foot center in 2022, featuring inpatient care rooms, a full-service emergency department, a modern operating room, rehabilitation gym, rural health clinics, and other patient care amenities.
