Overview
The Medical Consultant position serves as the program medical expert in the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch (OEEB). This position will gather, evaluate, and analyze technical data regarding environmental and occupational risks to health, interpret findings considering current medical knowledge, and develop and disseminate policies and best practices to optimize public health in collaboration with epidemiologists, toxicologists, and industrial hygienists within OEEB as well as other colleagues in the Division of Public Health. This may include actions to protect workers in high-risk occupations or during investigations, public health preparedness, and disaster response. This position frequently provides independent medical consultations to members of the public with specific environmental or occupational concerns.
The Medical Consultant supports public health surveillance activities in OEEB including exposures to lead, carbon monoxide, pesticides, and chemical releases. This position may supervise other OEEB staff. OEEB interacts with local, state, and federal governmental agencies including local health departments, NC Department of Environmental Quality, NC Department of Labor, NC Department of Public Safety, and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Work is performed independently under the administrative supervision of an Industrial Hygiene Consultant Supervisor. About OEEB

Our expertise includes epidemiology, toxicology, industrial hygiene, and health communications. We identify and quantify environmental concerns for public health surveillance, provide medical consultations for exposures of concern at work or in communities, conduct risk assessments, and provide scientifically based guidance on acceptable levels of exposure to environmental contaminants.
