Statement of Purpose The Counselor II fulfills their role as part of the treatment team, maintaining the well-being of clients and the integrity of the program.

Major Tasks, Duties And Responsibilities

Knowledge of drug and alcohol dependency, mental health, family systems, and 12-Step/recovery resources in the community.

Develop and maintain individualized records of client progress and participation in treatment, including admission, discharge, individual, group, family, vocational (both individual and group), literacy training, and other relevant occasions.

Write clear statements summarizing clients’ feelings, expressions, resistance, and responses to their treatment plans; including letters to referral agencies, courts, or probation.

Confront behavioral changes, identify crises, and recognize when additional assistance is necessary.

Acknowledge personal issues impacting job performance and interactions with clients.

Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.

Convey respect for cultural and lifestyle diversities of clients and staff.

Prepare for and facilitate educational groups.

Have basic knowledge of referrals within and outside the BHS treatment system.

May carry a caseload as needed.

Possess working knowledge of the philosophy and approach of the 12-Step recovery model (AA, CA, NA, Alanon).

Communicate clearly with clients, staff, peers, supervisors, and external resources.

Have basic computer skills, including Windows and MS Word, and adapt to the Caminar information system.

Prerequisite Qualifications Qualifications may be modified based on the Americans with Disabilities Act. Bilingual abilities may be required within certain programs.

High school diploma or equivalent; enrolled in a recognized chemical dependency counselor certification program or pursuing AOD certification, with six months’ substance abuse experience, or hold a Bachelor’s degree with registration in a credentialing body (e.g., CCAPP, CAADE). Maintain registration and complete certification timely to retain employment.

Valid California driver’s license and liability insurance if driving a personal vehicle for BHS business.

Adequate vision, hearing, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination for job duties. Ability to sit, write, use a keyboard, and move about the facility.

Qualifications Specific qualifications may vary. The supervisor will initial applicable items:

Class “B” California Driver’s License.

Class “C” California Driver’s License.

Personal vehicle with insurance for reimbursable mileage.

First Aid certification (within 90 days).

CPR certification (within 90 days).

Medication training (within 30 days).

Bi-lingual skills (specify).

Obtain NPI number.

Develop computer skills for Caminar/word processing within 90 days.
