Principal AWS Cloud Architect (DoD Contract) We are seeking a
Principal AWS Cloud Architect
to lead a mission-critical workload modernization initiative for the Department of Defense. This role is highly strategic, focusing on transforming legacy systems into secure, scalable, cloud-native solutions while ensuring DoD IL4 compliance. This is a
contract-to-hire opportunity , with an initial 3–6 month contract phase and the potential to transition into a full-time position. Base pay
Base pay range: $75.00/hr - $84.00/hr Responsibilities
Define and execute multi-year modernization strategies for DoD workloads Conduct current-state assessments and design future-state architectures aligned with mission needs Apply AWS Well-Architected Framework principles to optimize availability, scalability, cost, and security Influence stakeholders and drive organizational change in complex environments Modernize applications from monolithic EC2 deployments to serverless and containerized solutions Architect Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Terragrunt, CloudFormation) for compliant, repeatable deployments Optimize cost, performance, and security while consolidating legacy toolchains into AWS-native alternatives Enhance CI/CD pipelines with automated security testing and compliance validation Provide technical leadership to engineering teams adopting cloud-native practices Mentor staff on DevSecOps, AWS best practices, and modern architecture patterns Establish governance standards and facilitate knowledge transfer across teams Requirements
US Citizen with ability to obtain/maintain Secret clearance (IL4 environments) On-site presence required in
Alexandria, VA Hybrid flexibility up to 2 remote days per week after probation period Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred) 12+ years in enterprise cloud architecture and modernization 7+ years of DoD contract experience with IL4 compliance/security frameworks Expert-level AWS architecture across compute, storage, networking, and security Advanced Infrastructure as Code expertise (Terraform, CloudFormation, GitOps) Strong stakeholder management and communication skills Preferred Skills
