Principal AWS Cloud Architect
(Full Time, Contract-to-Hire; Onsite in Alexandria, VA) — Optomi, in partnership with a major HR-consulting company, is seeking a highly skilled Principal AWS Cloud Architect to lead a critical Department of Defense cloud modernization initiative. The focus will be on working with multiple teams supporting mission-critical systems to identify opportunities to modernize, secure, and optimize workloads in AWS. The candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing cloud-native architectures, leveraging automation, Infrastructure as Code, and DevSecOps practices to improve reliability, scalability, and compliance. Cloud Architecture Expertise: 12+ years in enterprise cloud architecture and modernization with expert-level AWS knowledge across compute, storage, networking, security, and managed services. DoD Compliance Knowledge: 7+ years supporting Department of Defense contracts with hands-on experience designing solutions in IL4 environments, navigating RMF, NIST, STIG, and DoD CC SRG frameworks. Modernization Leadership: Demonstrated success leading large-scale cloud transformations, including migrating legacy EC2-based applications to serverless, containerized, and cloud-native solutions. Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Advanced skills in Terraform and Terragrunt (plus CloudFormation), with proven ability to create repeatable, automated, and compliant deployments in complex environments. DevSecOps & Automation: Strong background in CI/CD modernization, including GitLab and Jenkins pipelines, automated testing, security scanning, and compliance validation. Security-First Mindset: Enterprise security experience applying compliance frameworks while reducing the ATO footprint and optimizing for operational resilience. Soft Skills & Leadership: Strong communication abilities for influencing without authority, mentoring engineering staff, and driving change across resistant or legacy-focused teams. Lead Modernization Strategy: Define and execute a multi-year roadmap to transition DoD mission systems from legacy, lift-and-shift applications to secure, scalable AWS cloud-native solutions. Architect Future State Systems: Conduct assessments of the current environment and design future architectures aligned with DoD mission requirements, leveraging AWS Well-Architected Framework principles. Implement Infrastructure as Code: Architect and deliver IaC solutions using Terraform, Terragrunt, and CloudFormation to enable standardized, repeatable deployments that meet compliance needs. Modernize CI/CD Pipelines: Redesign development pipelines to incorporate DevSecOps best practices, including automated testing, security scanning, compliance validation, and GitOps principles. Integrate and Transition Toolchains: Modernize or migrate existing tools (Sonatype Nexus, Fortify, BIG-IP, Elasticsearch, GitLab, Jenkins, RHEL servers) to AWS-native or cloud-optimized alternatives where appropriate. Cost Optimization & Resilience: Drive FinOps strategies to reduce costs while improving system performance, scalability, and reliability across large-scale AWS environments. Change Management & Influence: Navigate complex stakeholder environments, influencing outcomes and encouraging adoption of modern practices across resistant teams. Leadership & Mentorship: Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers, establish governance frameworks, and set architectural standards for consistent implementation across teams.
