Assistant Professor in Narrative or Non-Fiction Filmmaking - Tenure Track at Santa Clara University. The Department of Communication invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Digital Filmmaking with a focus on narrative or documentary filmmaking. The search emphasizes applicants whose creative work and teaching address Black and/or Latiné experiences and/or the representation of people of color, through a social justice lens. Responsibilities

Tenure-track faculty are teaching scholars balancing teaching, creative work, and service. This is an in-person position with duties including, but not limited to: Teaching:

lower- and upper-division courses in the major and core curriculum (e.g., Introduction to Digital Filmmaking, Screenwriting, Cinematography, Documentary Production, Short Fiction Production, Film/TV History). Typical load is two courses per quarter, with active engagement in creative work. Teaching is evaluated under the department’s TESE standards and Ignatian pedagogy principles (cura personalis). Research/Creative Work:

develop a program of creative work that meets the Communication Department’s standards for scholarship/creative activity; involvement of undergraduate students in faculty work is valued. Service:

contribute to the Department of Communication, College, University, and the profession through committees, professional activities, and community engagement as appropriate to rank and experience. Qualifications

Required: Terminal degree (MFA or Ph.D.) or ABD in Filmmaking or a related field by appointment start date. Demonstrated potential for effective and inclusive teaching and mentoring of a diverse undergraduate student population. Demonstrated ability to complete films or TV projects that have been accepted to film festivals, broadcast, or released in theaters. Preferred:

experience/interest in diversity, civic engagement, cultures and ideas; teaching and creative work focusing on Latiné and/or Black experiences; ability to connect with social justice goals in teaching and scholarship. Appointment and Start Date

The successful candidate will start on September 1, 2026 and will teach, engage in creative work, and perform service for the department, college, and university. Santa Clara University operates on the quarter system; tenure-track faculty typically teach six courses per year (two per quarter) while pursuing active creative work. There may be opportunities for additional salary and research funding in connection with Sinatra Assistant Professor appointments during the probationary period. Application Instructions

Salary range for this position is $85,947 to $95,410, depending on teaching experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and University retirement contributions.
