The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is a strategic, collaborative, and visionary leader who drives the mission of MFS: helping people overcome barriers of poverty, inequity, and social isolation. In partnership with the Board of Directors, the CEO ensures the agency fulfills its mission with excellence, equity, and efficiency. MFS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to equity and social justice, embedding Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) into programs, partnerships, and operations.

Key Leadership Responsibilities
Mission Leadership: Embed MFS’s core values into strategic planning, program delivery, and community advocacy.
Organizational Management: Oversee all agency operations, supervise the Executive Team, and ensure nonprofit regulatory compliance.
Strategic Growth: Guide long-term planning, organizational development, and innovation in response to community needs.
Community & Donor Relations: Drive resource development, represent MFS externally, and secure diversified funding.
Culture Building: Foster an equitable, collaborative, and continuously improving workplace.
The CEO honors MFS’s 75-year legacy and leads bold, future-focused strategies to uplift families and strengthen communities.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Community Relations and Advocacy The CEO serves as the primary ambassador of MFS, building relationships with government, private, and community partners to increase visibility, revenue, and impact. This includes:
Representing MFS on public boards and coalitions
Advancing advocacy that elevates participant voice and community needs
Pursuing partnerships that enhance program reach, quality, and effectiveness
Fundraising and External Engagement MFS faces a funding transition due to loss of government funding. The CEO leads a comprehensive resource development strategy in collaboration with the Board and Development Team to guide the organization toward long-term sustainability. This includes:
Serving as the organization’s chief fundraiser, cultivating and stewarding relationships with major donors, institutional funders, foundations, and corporate partners
Expanding fundraising capacity with grants, multi-year commitments, campaigns, partnerships, and events
Positioning MFS for major funding opportunities via government RFPs, foundations, and corporate partnerships
Building a culture of philanthropy across the organization
Strategic Communications In partnership with leadership, the CEO develops a clear communications strategy:
Ensure consistent messaging reflecting MFS values and priorities
Engage staff and volunteers with two-way communication and feedback
Promote equity-informed narratives across platforms
Serve as a compelling public speaker and promote transparent communication
Strategic Vision and Impact
Co-lead strategic planning with leadership and Board
Translate goals into measurable outcomes and embed them in daily operations
Champion innovation and culturally responsive service models
Ensure sound fiscal management, diversified funding, and regulatory compliance
Inclusive Culture and Staff Leadership
Supervise the Executive Team and ensure leadership accountability
Promote professional development and equitable advancement
Uphold DEIJ commitments and implement policies reflecting these values
Board Relations and Governance
Develop a strategic and engaged Board through recruitment and governance
Communicate needs and priorities with clear reports
Collaborate with the Board to evaluate and revise policies
Financial and Operational Management
Oversee budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting for health and sustainability
Ensure diversified and sustainable funding
Lead risk and crisis management and ensure accountability systems
Ensure regulatory and legal compliance

Education And Experience Required
MA, MS, or MSW in Social Services, Public Health, Management, or related field
Ten years of relevant, paid experience as a nonprofit director or manager (equivalent experience considered)
Demonstrated experience leading resource development including fundraising and donor cultivation
Knowledge of human services, community-based practice, and culturally responsive program delivery
Comfort with technology, including Google Suite, Word, and Excel
Essential Knowledge And Skills
Strong written and verbal communication across audiences and cultures
Strategic planning, time management, and outcomes-oriented organizational skills
Financial oversight and budgeting experience with budgets over $5M
Supervising, coaching, and performance evaluation skills
Experience in diverse, multicultural environments
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with a Board of Directors
Familiarity with public sector funding, RFP processes, and government compliance
Experience leading strategic communications and change management
Deep nonprofit sector knowledge including structure, policy, and legal compliance
Ability to work with technology, including Google Suite, Word, and Excel
Physical ability to perform routine office tasks
Other Requirements
Access to reliable transportation for local travel; valid driver license and auto insurance as required
MFS requires all employees and volunteers to complete a criminal background check. We carefully review results and consider circumstances in the hiring process.
Work Environment Hybrid with regular on-site presence; some early morning, evening, or weekend obligations. Ability to sit for extended periods, occasionally stand, and use Google Suite and standard office equipment. May require stairs.
