Your Work Environment at EXP
EXP is currently searching for a Fire Protection Engineer to support projects for our Chicago Headquarters. This engineer will contribute to the engineering, design, and specification of fire protection systems for governmental, education, commercial and entertainment market sectors, within a flexible hybrid model.
What a Day at EXP Has in Store for You Revit and CAD proficiency with fire protection drawings
Develop sections, riser diagrams and elevations of complex equipment and piping areas
Develop equipment room sizes during SD and DD phases
Determine content of drawings and specs to meet the scope of work
Edit specifications to reflect project requirements
Select and schedule equipment with limited oversight
Meet with vendors to determine specification requirements
Critically evaluate contractor pricing and cost estimates
Maintain the Engineering Book for the project
Respond to RFIs and review submittals
Understand work planning and manage design processes across multiple projects
Collaborate with team, project managers and clients to meet milestones
Address installation problems with fire protection systems; travel to sites as needed
Conduct site surveys independently
Perform code research to comply with local codes and meet with code officials
Demonstrate understanding of NFPA, IBC, ASHRAE, ASME and OSHA codes; track year-to-year variations
Write new specification sections and develop details as required
Apply risk management procedures to minimize exposure to EXP and clients
Edit and develop scope of work narratives (SD narrative, basis of design, etc.)
Write studies and reports for fire protection systems on various projects
Fire Pump – select pump and accessories for proper pressures and flows; layout enlarged fire pump room
Flow tests – direct water flow tests at hydrants or hose connections
Understand and apply gas suppression, deluge, pre-action systems, and high-rise design
Basic knowledge of Factory Mutual standards and requirements
Analyze fire hazards and mitigate fire damage through proper design
Coordinate construction/arrangements
Familiar with building structures and materials
Experience with fire modeling and simulation software
Strong management and organization skills
Experience in conducting existing fire protection system and risk assessments
Experience with wet pipe systems per NFPA 13, NFPA 14
What Your Experience Looks Like 4+ years of building fire protection design experience across commercial projects and multiple industry segments (governmental, education, commercial, entertainment, etc.)
Engineering Degree (BS Architectural Engineering, BS Mechanical Engineering, BS Fire Protection Engineering, or equivalent) preferred
Registered Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) or eligible for immediate registration
REVIT MEP and AutoCAD proficiency
Ability to travel to client meetings and project sites for walkthrough activities
Compensation and Benefits
The pay range for this role is $125,000 to $150,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors including skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location. This may differ by location due to variations in cost of labor. In addition to competitive pay, we offer a comprehensive benefits package for all full-time employees, including health insurance, vacation time, and 401(k) retirement benefits.
