Senior Environmental Biologist

Stantec . Stantec is seeking a consulting biologist with a minimum of 10 years of experience to join the southern California Ecosystems Group, operating from the San Diego, California office. The position involves both field and office work, with potential field work during construction and ecosystem restoration projects. The Senior Biologist will contribute to multi-disciplinary project teams in siting and licensing of energy production (including renewable energy) and transmission projects, as well as natural resource planning and management projects. The role requires coordination with clients, resource agencies, and environmental and technical staff, with a focus on field biology, regulatory strategy, CEQA/NEPA analysis, and permitting strategy.

What You Will Do for Stantec

Manage projects, supervise staff, lead and mentor project field teams, and support other project managers on renewable energy, oil and gas, and other development projects.

Schedule, assist, or lead field tasks such as botanical surveys, special-status species surveys, nesting bird surveys, vegetation assessments and mapping, jurisdictional waters delineations, and compliance monitoring.

Provide guidance to junior staff, including training recommendations, coaching, and mentoring.

Plan, prepare, and review technical reports or portions of larger environmental assessments.

Work with business development teams to respond to RFPs, define scope of work, estimate costs, and compile proposal sections.

Contribute to the corporate profile through participation in professional associations and committees.

Coordinate with clients and regulators to communicate survey results and technical reports.

Lead development of permitting strategies, permit applications, and agency negotiations.

Assist teams and lead efforts in pursuing new business opportunities and producing technical proposals.

Maintain a target 75-80% direct project utilization; occasional overnight travel may be required within and outside of southern California.

Your Capabilities and Credentials Skills

Minimum 10 years of related experience conducting biological resources surveys and preparing technical reports, with increasing levels of responsibility.

Strong project management experience, collaboration within multi-disciplinary teams, and ability to deliver quality work within scope, budget, and schedule.

Excellent written and verbal communication, and organizational skills.

Business development acumen with established client and regulatory agency relationships, or ability to develop them.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities with scientific data, maps, and drawings.

Extensive knowledge of flora, fauna, and vegetative communities of southern California; experience in other California regions is a plus.

Experience in floristic botanical surveys, wildlife surveys, and protocol surveys; familiarity with special-status species (e.g., Chino checkerspot butterfly, arroyo toad, burrowing owl, coastal California gnatcatcher, least Bell’s vireo, SW willow flycatcher, Mohave ground squirrel, desert tortoise) is a plus.

Experience in preparing regulatory documents (BRTRs, ARDRs, CEQA/NEPA sections) and permit applications (e.g., CWA 404/401, WDRs, ITPs).

Experience leading environmental permitting for energy facilities, pipelines, and linear infrastructure in the western U.S.; ability to work on construction projects, provide environmental training, and perform post-construction monitoring.

Experience with GPS/GIS data collection and mapping; possession of a California Scientific Collecting Permit or similar is a plus; wetland delineation training is a plus.

Must be able to travel occasionally; valid driver’s license and good driving record; medical/drug screening may be required for some projects; OSHA HAZWOPER 40 certification is a plus.

Education and Experience BS (MS degree preferred) in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field with a minimum of 10 years of experience.
