CNA Financial Lines has an opening for a Complex Claims Consultant handling Private D&O, Fiduciary and Employment Practice Liability (EPL) Claims. This role works with insureds, attorneys and brokers regarding the handling and disposition of mid to high severity claims. Responsibilities include investigating claims, coordinating discovery, and working with defense counsel on litigation strategy. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, independently motivated and responsive/communicative. Location: Hybrid work environment in Chicago, Glastonbury, Lake Mary, Wyomissing, NYC area preferred; candidates near any CNA location will be considered.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Manage an inventory of highly complex Financial Lines claims with large exposures, verify policy coverage, conduct investigations, develop resolution strategies, and authorize disbursements within authority limits.
Provide exceptional customer service by managing all aspects of the claim, communicating professionally, and meeting quality and cycle time standards.
Verify coverage and establish reserves by reviewing policy language and collaborating with coverage counsel on complex matters; estimate potential claim valuation per guidelines.
Lead focused investigations to determine compensability, liability and damages; gather documents, take statements, and work with experts as needed.
Develop and execute claim resolution strategies with internal/external partners, manage reserves, negotiate settlements, and oversee litigation with counsel as appropriate.
Establish and manage claim budgets, authorize expenses, and deliver high-quality service efficiently.
Identify subrogation, salvage opportunities or fraud indicators and refer for further investigation as needed.
Ensure compliance with company protocols, maintain thorough documentation, and resolve and pay claims timely.
Keep senior leadership informed of significant risks and losses with loss summaries and oversight-ready reports.
Maintain subject matter expertise and ensure regulatory compliance by staying current on applicable laws and trends.
Mentor and train less experienced Claim Professionals when needed.
May perform additional duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationship Typically Director or above.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the commercial insurance industry, products, policy language, coverage, and claim practices.
Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills; ability to convey technical information clearly.
Analytical and investigative mindset with strong decision-making capabilities; ability to resolve complex problems.
Strong work ethic, time management and organizational skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
Experience negotiating complex settlements and interpreting complex policies.
Microsoft Office proficiency and ability to learn business software.
Desire to value diverse opinions and ideas.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience; JD preferred.
Typically 5–7 years of relevant claims experience, preferably in claim handling.
