Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 1 year License: Current RN License required Certifications: BLS required Must-Have: 1 year of experience; will accept first-time travelers Description: Unit has a capacity of 48 beds. Nurse to Patient Ratios: 1:5-7 on days, 1:6-8 on nights. Required certifications: BLS and RN License. Can take Patient Care Technician class to become PCT or have a CNA. Common diagnoses/types of patients include pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and falls/weakness. RNs are required to titrate drips, with exceptions for cardiac drip titration. Common titratable and/or set rate drips include heparin, bumex, and lasix. Charge nurse on each shift takes on patient assignments. There may be 2 charge nurses on day shift who will have patient assignments. At night, if only 1 charge nurse is scheduled, they do not take an assignment. There are nurse aids/patient care techs on the unit with an average ratio of 1:10-12. Job duties include obtaining vitals, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning patients. Respiratory therapy equipment such as ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow O2 are monitored by the RNs. Respiratory therapists administer breathing treatments and manage respiratory equipment; RNs typically monitor them. A monitor tech is located on a different level and reads and monitors telemetry for all patients. Nurses are not expected to read and interpret telemetry strips. Shifts for RNs are from 7 PM to 7 AM. Patient Care Technicians have shifts from 6 AM to 6 PM. There is no self-scheduling or block scheduling available. Schedule is determined by the manager, who works with staff on requested time off. Every other weekend work is required. Holidays may be rotated among RNs, and Patient Care Technicians are scheduled as needed. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating may occur to any medical-surgical, medical-surgical telemetry, or intermediate care unit for lower acuity patients. Scrubs for RNs are navy blue, while PCTs wear ceil blue. Job-specific orientation includes 1 day with the educator and 1 day with a preceptor. Charting system used is Cerner Corporation - Soarian. No BSN requirement.
