Overview

Large, busy, urban library seeks creative, engaged, people-person to lead its reference, programming, and adult services.

The Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon is seeking applicants for a Reference, Programming and Adult Services Manager position. This position will be responsible for the development, coordination, support and review of reference, public programming, and adult services for the Library to ensure consistent quality.

This person reports to the Deputy Director and will work closely and collaboratively with the Youth Services Coordinator and the directors of the Central Library and Neighborhood Libraries to ensure a high standard of public service across the library system. Most of the services this position coordinates are delivered by Neighborhood, Central, and Outreach staff, many of whom do not report directly to this position. In addition, this position will advise and work closely with the Collections Manager and the training department. The Reference, Programming & Adult Services Coordinator will represent related issues to the senior management team while maintaining a system-wide approach and will provide highly responsible, complex staff assistance to the Deputy Director and Director.

Responsibilities
  • With other senior managers, coordinate and participate in the development of the Librarys vision, goals and objectives and work plan.
  • Direct, oversee and participate in the development of the librarys reference, programming and adult services goals, objectives and work plans in alignment with the library departments vision.
  • Assess long-term library service needs of the community and engage the community in the librarys vision as it relates to programming, reference and adult services.
  • Lead, manage, support, coach and supervise key staff and managers of work units responsible for service delivery to the public.

Experience

Demonstrated leadership and management experience in librarianship typically gained through at least 3 years of senior management/administrative experience in a multi-branch library system, a central library, and/or experience in managing a major division within a large library system. Some experience in all three areas (programming, reference, and adult services) preferred. Significant experience in at least one required.

Training

Masters degree in library and information science from an accredited college or university.
