This position is located in the Nursing Department at one of the various Indian Health Service facilities in the Great Plains Area. Performs primary functions of a Registered Nurse in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of all assigned patients in the Outpatient Department with medical, surgical, pediatric, obstetric, or newborn conditions.

Duties

  • Assess patient care needs, perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients. Reassess as needed.
  • Develops plan of care for individual patients, identifying problems and needs of the patient and adjust plan of care as needed.
  • Formulates nursing interventions based on appropriately identified nursing diagnosis, consults with primary care provider on patients to coordinate plan of care. Administers therapeutic and emergency measures as prescribed by the physician, operates specialized equipment such as defibrillator, infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, glucometers, maintains equipment checklist, assist with management of supplies and equipment, documents observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures administered and patient response to treatment, adheres to time and attendance policies.
  • Evaluates outcomes and reassesses and revises the plan of care as delineated in Nursing Standards; evaluates professional growth and revises new objectives as needed; assists in the evaluation of employee performance (peer reviews).
  • Participates in performance improvement projects. Leads a PL project in the Nursing Department.

Requirements

  • Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.
  • The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Qualifications

  • To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part-time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

  • In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service, performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-9: one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. Examples of experience include: providing professional nursing care, assessing needs of patients; knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their effects and complications; recognizing adverse signs and symptoms and reacting promptly in emergencies; providing counseling, guidance and health instruction; identifying disease entities and interventions. OR possess a master's degree in professional nursing.

Time In Grade

  • Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.

Education

  • This position has an education requirement. You are strongly encouraged to submit transcripts. Official transcripts required from selected candidates prior to offer. Only schools accredited by recognized accrediting bodies will be credited. Foreign education: include a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript if applicable.

  • Measles, Rubella, and seasonal influenza immunization required for selectees and staff in IHS facilities. Vaccine exemptions may be available per guidance.
  • Federal Employees earn annual leave based on years of service. Newly appointed employees may receive credit for related experience or active duty service. This can affect leave accrual.
  • This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
