Overview

Join to apply for the Nurse role at Indian Health Service. This position is located at one of the various Service Units under the Navajo Area Indian Health Service. These positions provide a limited range of monitoring and administration of nursing care, therapies and treatments. Evaluate and develop individual nursing plan of care by implementing the plan to ensure quality patient care is given.

Duties

  • Performs limited nursing duties, completes assignments with guidance from a higher grade employee or supervisor.
  • Receives orientation and guidance on nursing policies, regulations, techniques and procedure to which assigned.
  • Provides limited nursing care for patients.
  • Administers drugs prescribed for patients.
  • Obtains blood specimens.
  • Measures temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight and blood pressure and tests vision and hearing.
  • Documents care provided electronically or manually in health records.
  • Submits patient referrals and coordinates appointments with various clinics.
  • Participates in development, update and evaluation of nursing standards of care. Maintains professional caring attitude when dealing with patients and their families.

Requirements

  • This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.
  • Adherence to the IHS Circular 2016-04 requiring Measles and Rubella, and seasonal influenza immunizations for staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities OR an exemption request will need to be submitted.
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • May be required to work on a regularly assigned or rotational basis during the day, evening, nights, and weekends and/or holiday.
  • You will need to set up direct deposit so we can pay you.

Background Investigation

If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. The investigation must find that you are suitable for Federal employment in your position. If you are found not suitable, you will be terminated after you begin work. If you make a false statement in any part of your application, you may not be hired; you may be fired after you begin work; or subject to possible criminal charges. You may be subject to a credit check as a part of the background investigation process.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Education and Licensure

  • Education: At minimum, an associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing program. A graduate or higher degree is also acceptable if from an accredited program.
  • Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
  • Licensure: Must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and hold a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
  • You are encouraged to submit transcripts; unofficial transcripts accepted initially; official transcripts required prior to offer.
  • Education verification: Only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by recognized accrediting bodies may be credited.

Additional information

  • Federal Employees earn annual leave based on years of credited service. IHS may offer related experience credit for leave determination.
  • This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
  • Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. A service agreement may be required.
