Overview

This is skilled work in the operation of moderate to heavy construction equipment. The position operates skid steer, backhoe, excavator, dozer, dump truck, and other equipment as needed in demolition, grading for asphalt and concrete placement, installation and repair of utilities, and other construction activities. The role may involve night and/or weekend work to meet department needs and may require reporting during inclement weather to assist in duties such as tree clearing and snow/ice removal.

Responsibilities

  • Operate skid steer, backhoe, excavator, dozer, dump trucks, and other equipment in support of civil related construction projects (utility installation, grading/drainage, hauling, paving/sidewalk construction, etc.).
  • Excavate and install utility piping and assist with utility repairs as assigned.
  • Establish elevations and set base for new pavement construction; assist in asphalt placement and the forming and placement of concrete.
  • Set up and perform traffic control; place and maintain barricades, cones, and temporary signage.
  • Respond to Grounds Department emergencies to maintain campus safety, including during inclement weather.
  • Assist other shops for needed repairs and provide support as required.
  • Staging of equipment and trucks on job sites and instructing other employees as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, formal training programs, or on-the-job training. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
  • Preferred Qualifications: 3-4 years’ experience operating moderate to heavy construction equipment in support of civil related construction and maintenance projects.
  • Knowledge of advanced construction practices/techniques including concrete forming/placement, grading, and job site safety.
  • Class B CDL license; knowledge of CDL rules and regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil construction plans; ability to perform manual labor as needed in support of construction activities.
  • Ability to operate heavy construction equipment (skid steers, backhoes, excavators, dozers, dump trucks, etc.).

Physical Demands

  • Stand, walk, stoop, bend, squat, and lift up to 75 lbs. during an 8-hour shift.
  • Perform duties under adverse weather conditions; driving as needed to perform job duties.

Work Schedule & Special Conditions

Additional Schedule Information: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM. No on-call rotation. Essential Worker. Some night and/or weekend work may be needed to meet department needs. Driving is a responsibility of this position. This position has security access.
