About the Role:

The City of Newcastle is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Accountant to support our Finance Department on a temporary, limited-term basis. This position plays a key role in ensuring financial integrity, preparing annual financial reports, and providing technical expertise in accounting and compliance. If you have strong analytical skills and thrive in a collaborative environment, this is an excellent opportunity to contribute your expertise to municipal finance operations.

What You'll Do:

·Maintain the integrity of computerized accounting journals, ledgers, and financial records.

·Prepare and submit financial statement notes and schedules to the State Auditor’s Office (SAO); serve as primary liaison during audits.

·Monitor departmental financial transactions for compliance with BARS and GAAP.

·Perform financial analysis, projections, and prepare reports to assist management decision-making.

·Prepare annual and monthly financial statements, reconciliations, and grant accounting reports.

·Serve as backup for payroll and accounts payable processing.

·Ensure compliance with PCI requirements and internal control standards.

·Support budget preparation and review of departmental internal controls.

·Collaborate across departments to resolve financial issues and provide guidance.

Who You Are:

A finance professional who is:

·Knowledgeable in BARS, GAAP, GASB, and municipal finance requirements.

·Skilled at using accounting systems, spreadsheets, and financial reporting software.

·Experienced in preparing comprehensive financial statements and audit documentation.

·An effective communicator who can explain complex accounting concepts to non-financial staff.

·Organized, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize competing tasks.

·A team player who values accuracy, accountability, and confidentiality.

Education & Experience:

Required:

• Knowledge and experience with integrated accounting software and spreadsheet applications.

·Combination of education and experience that demonstrates ability to perform essential duties.

Preferred:

·Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

·At least two years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience.

·Experience working in municipal or governmental accounting.
