Summary
Work in an ambulatory health care center. Work or learn to work closely with patients and dentists. Assist in care of patient's teeth, recordkeeping, appointment scheduling, taking x-rays. We are accepting applications year-round with eligible applicants placed on a standing register and eligible candidates referred for consideration as vacancies occur with referral at multiple grade levels and locations and type of appointments.
Duties
- GS-02: Assist higher grade dental assistants in accomplishing dental support work and comparable activities to gain the knowledge, skills and experiences required for performance at the next grade level.
- GS-03 and GS-04: Acts as receptionist and schedules patients for treatment; responsible for accurate recording of examination information and treatment performed; keeps all instruments sharpened and properly sterilized; responsible for routine chair-side assisting; exposes, processes, and mounts intra- and extra-oral radiographs.
If selected candidate is hired at GS-02, the selected candidate gains experience toward the next level of GS-03 and until the full performance level of GS-04 is achieved.
Requirements
- Conditions of employment: Selectee may be subject to a probationary period; U.S. Citizenship is required; Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Special designation: This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. The agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of certain crimes.
- Immunization: Adherence to the IHS Immunization Policy (Measles, Mumps, Rubella, COVID-19, and seasonal influenza) or an exemption request is required.
- Background checks: Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check; pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation; continued employment contingent on suitability

Individual Occupational Requirements (for Positions At GS-3 And Above)
- Certification to Administer Radiologic Procedures: Public Law 97-35 requires that radiologic personnel meet credentialing standards. Requirements include education and credentialing as radiographers. The following meet these basic requirements:
- GS-3 and above: Specialized experience includes dental assistance and expanded function work relevant to the position.
Minimum Qualifications by Grade
- GS-02: Minimum 3 months of general experience demonstrating ability to perform duties.
- GS-03: Minimum 6 months of general experience; examples include medical office support or dental office receptionist.
- GS-04: Minimum 12 months total experience, including at least 6 months of general experience related to scheduling and dental terminology, and 6 months of specialized experience in dental assistance or expanded functions.
Education: GS-2 substitute education and training; GS-3 requires 1-year dental assistant program or related ADA-accredited program or practical nurse training; GS-4 requires 2-year dental assistant or dental hygiene program with relevant coursework. Unofficial transcripts are accepted with official transcripts required later.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the established cut-off date or closing date.
Education Details
- GS-2: Successful completion of high school education or equivalent.
- GS-3: Either 1-year dental assistant program or 1-year dental hygiene program with relevant radiology courses; or practical nurse training.
- GS-4: 2-year dental assistant or dental hygiene program with relevant coursework.

Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized with a service agreement. This position has promotion potential to GS-04, contingent on management approval and demonstrated ability.
