Overview
Work in an ambulatory health care center. Work or learn to work closely with patients and dentists. Assist in care of patient\'s teeth, recordkeeping, appointment scheduling, taking x-rays.
Duties
- At the GS-02 level: Assist higher grade dental assistants in accomplishing dental support work and comparable activities to gain the knowledge, skills and experiences required for performance at the next grade level.
- At the GS-03 and GS-04 levels: Acts as receptionist and schedules patients for treatment; Responsible for accurate recording of examination information and treatment performed; Keep all instruments sharpened and properly sterilized; Responsible for routine chair-side assisting; Expose, process, and mount intra- and extra-oral radiographs.
Requirements
Conditions of employment: Selectee may be subject to a probationary period. U.S. Citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Immunization requirements apply (IHS policies). Successful pass of the E-Verify employment verification check. Direct deposit is required. Background investigation including fingerprint check is required prior to hire and continued employment is contingent upon clearance. False statements may disqualify or lead to removal from employment.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must clearly demonstrate the experience and/or education required for the specific grade level for which you are applying. Experience includes paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work; you will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including part-time and volunteer work, with duties and hours clearly described.
- GS-02: At least 3 months of general experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of this position.
- GS-03: At least 6 months of general experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties; examples include medical office support or dental office receptionist.
- GS-04: At least 1 year of experience, including at least 6 months of general experience (patient scheduling and dental terminology) and 6 months of specialized experience in dental assistance.
Education note:
- GS-02: Successful completion of high school education or equivalent.
- GS-03: Either (a) 1-year dental assistant program or 1-year dental hygiene program with radiation-related coursework, or (b) practical nurse training approved by state accrediting body.
- GS-04: 2-year dental assistant or 2-year dental hygiene program with requisite coursework as noted for GS-3.

Promotion to GS-04 is at management\'s discretion and not guaranteed. Federal benefits apply; eligibility depends on position type. This position is located in the Western Oregon Service Unit and Yakama Service Unit under a Bargaining Unit. Additional selection may be possible within 240 days from the certificate issue date.
